How to Build a Log Cabin Kelly's Early Childhood Crew 2012

Find a good place To build your home you need to find a good place to live. You need to have a place with lots of large trees, a small river and clear land without weeds. You need a place that you can grow your crops.

Gather the Materials The next step is to gather your materials. You need to fell the trees, and then take them by wagon to the place you are building. You then need to clean the logs and cut them into the right size. You will need to gather rocks for the foundation and chimney.

Build the Foundation Now you are ready to build the foundation. Measure out the logs to see how big your house will be. Then use the measurement for the foundation. Find the foundation rocks. You will need to find medium to large, flat rocks. First, use your ax to create the notches. Lay two logs across from each other and then two more logs across from each other to make a square.

Build the Walls To build the walls you first need to use an ax to notch the logs. You need to make the logs flat and leveled using and adse ax. Put two big logs on the foundation. Keep stacking the notched logs in a criss cross pattern. This will be in the shape of a square. Make a ramp to roll the logs up onto each other. Line up the notches. Cut off the parts of the logs that are sticking out to make the logs even. Keep stacking until you have the right height of the cabin.

Add the Roof The first step to building the roof is to put on a skeleton roof. To do this you have to climb a ladder. Put wood across the top of the roof. The logs will be apart from each other. Put a sheet over the skeleton roof. We are putting wood on the roof. Put thin flat slat boards on the entire roof. You can use rope to tie down the boards

Hang the Door Now we need to hang the door. Build the door 6 feet high. Stack the wood together side by side. Use the nails to put the wood together. Use wood to make the frame of the door. Make the bottom and the sides of the door flat. Step 6-Build and hang the door. We have to put up the hinges on the side door frame. Use wood to make the hinges.Put the hinges into the side of the door. Make wood pegs to make the screws. Put the wood pegs into the hinges. Hang the door onto the nails and hinges. Break some sticks into small bits and make them to a shape to make them move.

Build the Chimney We need to build a chimney. You need to gather wood, and small, flat, oval and round rocks and mud. Build a wood frame in the side of the house for the fireplace. Stack the rocks into the mud. Leave and opening in the front. On the outside of the cabin, build the rocks higher using mud to secure the rocks into place. Using your ax make two small logs flat to put on the side of the fire place. Secure the logs with pegs or nails. Make a mantle by placing a piece of wood across the top of the fireplace.

Cut the window and the chinking. We are now ready for the final steps. In order to make the windows, you need to make marks to show the size of the windows. Cut the window with a saw. Make the windows high enough so danger cannot get in. Place oil cloth over the window. Dry the oil cloth. Use a hammer and screw to secure the oil cloth. Then you need to add the chinking to fill in all the cracks of the house. To do this you first get the materials. You will need mud, sticks, rocks,, leaves and grass. Mix the materials together. Then put the mixture into the cracks of the log cabin. Let the mixture dry.

You are now ready to move into your new home.!
