Introduction Written by Audrey Bohn Greg's Upbringing | Uncle Len's Woods Resort Minocqua, Wisconsin
Greg grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and discovered his passion for fishing at a young age. At the age of seven Greg would ride his bike to nearby parks to fish all day long as often as he could. Greg's passion for fishing was supported by his Uncles Ted and Len who would always take him to the lakes to spend time fishing together. Uncle Len would also spend time in Minocqua to fish where he eventually purchased Woods Resort and Motel. This is where Greg would spend alot of his summers and learned about the lakes in the area. Before Greg and I started dating he would come to my house several times to show me the fish he had caught each day in hopes to catch my heart, which he did indeed. In 1973 we married, then a year later moved to Crivitz Wisconsin where we could start a family in a prime fishing area away from the cities. This is where he started his guiding career. Greg was always developing techniques and tackle to perfect his fishing. His clients encouraged him to market his products which was the start of our Stinger Tackle Company. This led him to spend the winters traveling to Sport Shows and seminars for speaking engagements and selling his products. In 1983 we moved our family of 3 daughters to Minocqua Wisconsin so Greg could grow his guide career in an area he was familiar with of over 1000 lakes. As his guide career grew so did the Stinger Tackle Company which encouraged us to open a retail store, Strictly Walleye Headquarters where we housed the tackle company and his guiding business. Greg also spent the fall time of the year guiding on Bay De Noc Michigan where he led his clients to many big walleyes. After 11 years in retail we decided to sell out so Greg could concentrate on his guiding, speaking and writing. Greg has alway had a big following for his knowledge and teaching techniques. Today he is still guiding some of the same clients he has had for over 30 years.
The Early Years | In 1976 Greg Bohn followed the advise of his clients and went door to door to retail stores to market his "Original Stinger Hook". His hopes was to sell his first gross (144) of "The Original Stinger Hook" to Nicholi Sporting Goods in Green Bay Wisconsin. Bill Nicholi liked the idea, and bought them all, Luckily for Bohn since he did not have enough gas money to get back home. Excited to tell his wife Audrey about the tale, Nicholi Sports already had called to place another order for (288) hooks. The original order "sold out" in less than 4 hours. This was the start of his Stinger Tackle Line.
Greg's guiding career began in Crivitz Wisconsin. In l983 they moved to Minocqua to pursue an area familiar to Greg that provided more lakes to guide on.
Stinger Tackle Company 1976-2000 Greg started the Stinger Tackle Co. out of the laundry room of their home in Crivitz, The work table was the top of a washer & dryer located in a back storage room. This is where he designed the Original Stinger Hook. in 1983 they moved it to the basement of their home in Hazelhurst where they hired several employees to help manufacture, package and ship the walleye products greg developed. Local guides watched and followed Greg across the Northwoods' trying to discover his secret walleye presentations. Greg developed terminal tackle that would defy snags. Today their some of tackle concepts and inventions are sold at retail stores and catalogs across the country over 30/years later. | Tackle and Guide Brochures

Greg Bohn and Bill Selby invented the 1st ever soft plastic musky lure to anglers in 1987. The Vip-R Tail was originally introduced at the Chicago Sport Show. It was the top selling musky lure in America 3-straight years. Both inventors struggled with high manufacturing demands, molding process, embedding hook harness and fish strike durability. Excessive tooth damage to the lure was a major problem and concern of Bohn's. Creating the right texture and consistency was the lures ultimate challenge. The retail and angler interest for the bait was overwhelming that neither Bohn or Selby would handle the growth and finances for marketing the lure. Soon fearsome competition to produce similar baits like Joe's Creature and the Bulldawg began almost immediately. Today there are over 30 companies manufacturing soft plastic musky lures or lure tail attachments. | Vip-R Tail Musky Lure
Bohn proposes Life Jacket Bill | Greg biggest concern on the water is SAFETY. Greg teamed up with Rep Al Ott to pass the Senate Bill 587 to mandate all children under the age of 13 to wear life vests while the boat is moving. Greg received enough support to get the Life Jacket Bill to the Senate floor for their vote in Feb 2016. The day before the vote one person wanted a change which removed it from the voting process due to timing to make the change. The bill has been halted and will have to be re-entered with more support to take it to the senate for a vote in 2017.
All children younger than 13 years old should be required to wear personal flotation devices. That's what Greg Bohn will tell Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp at a meeting in Madison Sept. 17. Bohn, a local professional fishing guide, is passionate about boating safety and believes state laws pertaining to personal flotation device (PFD) use are too lax. Children younger than 13 cannot be expected to make their own water safety decisions, Bohn said in a recent meeting with DNR Conservation Warden Supervisor David Walz. One reason for changing the state law, he said, is to remove confusion by aligning state law with federal law. In Wisconsin, several waters are enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard and are considered federal waters. These waters include the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. On those waters, all children under 13 years of age must be wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while a vessel is underway unless they are below deck or within an enclosed cabin. Another reason Bohn cites for changing the law is that it puts parents at risk. "Many parents would not even consider going on the water without their children wearing a life vest - unfortunately, most parents don't wear one," Bohn said. | "Many parents would not even consider going on the water without their children wearing a life vest - unfortunately, most parents don't wear one," Bohn said. There have been cases of parents drowning while saving overboard children who were not wearing PFDs. In 2010 on Lake Minocqua, a mother drowned while saving the life of her overboard 8-year-old daughter. In 2014, a woman died helping save three children who were not wearing PFDs on Star Lake. Bohn said strict PFD laws requiring adolescents and children to wear PFDs would help avoid such preventable deaths. Bohn will be bringing his concerns to the DNR later this month, but any change in the law would require legislative action. Current Wisconsin law regarding PFDs requires the following: All vessels (including canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards) must have at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket for each person on board; All vessels 16 feet or longer must have one U.S. Coast Guard-approved throwable PFD on board that is "immediately accessible;" Every person on board a personal watercraft must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket; and All life jackets must be in good and serviceable condition, readily accessible and of the proper size for the intended wearer. Those being towed behind a boat on skis, a wakeboard, tube or other device are not required to wear a PFD in Wisconsin. Bohn bemoans the term "readily accessible" as entirely subjective and not applicable during a real boating disaster. He hopes Wisconsin can implement more common-sense PFD laws that have been adopted by other states and thereby save lives by avoiding preventable injury and death on Wisconsin's waters.
