Amendment 1 The First Amendment is people have freedom of speech, This means people can say or express what they think. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can tell lies. Freedom of religion means the government can't tell people what religion or god to believe in. Also, in a public school, teachers can't force you to pray. Freedom of press means that people can express their beliefs and opinions through music, and art and publishing their thoughts in newspapers ,magazines websites, and in books. This amendment allows people to read books on any topic. Books can not be censored. Parents, not the government are the only people who can censor kids' reading.
2nd Amendment The 2nd amendment means people (not just police or the army) can own a gun. When it comes to gun laws, each state can have their own laws. In some states you can carry a gun with you in public and in others you can't.
The Third Amendment is often the forgotten amendment, With the 3rd amendment, soldiers can't live in people's private homes. We haven't used this amendment lately because we haven't had a big war in the US. Today, soldiers live on Army bases.
The fourth Amendment is where the police have to have a search warrant to search your home or property. Teachers don't have to have a search warrant to search a locker but they need a good reason. They can do this because they are trying to keep kids safe.
It is important to understand the 4th amendment so I know what police and teachers can do.
The fifth amendment- No person can not be tried twice for the same crime, that is called double jeopardy. Police have to pay you a fair amount to take your private property. When arrested the police have to tell you the reason why your getting arrested, and they can't make you testify against yourself.
Because of The fifth amendment we have the Miranda right- its when you get arrested by a police officer and he or she has to say "you have the right to remain silent anything you say can and will be held against you in the court of law,if you cant afford a lawyer one will be appointed to you.
The sixth amendment is the right to a speedy and public trial. and the right to a lawyer. You have to be told why your arrested, because in some countries people might not know why there being arrested and the people have to sit in jail for a long time and not even know what for.
The seventh amendment-The seventh amendment means you have the right to a jury in civil cases when the argument is over $10,000. A civil case is not criminal. It is when people are arguing over money. An example would if a landlord sues the person living in an apartment because they didn't pay their rent.
The | The eighth amendment- This amendment protects people from cruel and unusual punishments.Back then when someone did something wrong they used to punish them the wrong way, for example-electric shock, slit you nose, cut of your ears and many more.It also protects people from unreasonably high and excessive fines, for example-When an officer gives you a fine that is more than necessary you can take the officer to jail so you don't have to pay that much money.
The Ninth Amendment-The Ninth Amendment means that people have other rights that are not just listed in the first 8 amendments. For example if you wanted to dye your hair a different color you can because that isn't in any of the amendments before the eighth.
