FC: The Mighty Miami Indians | By Caitlin Adams

It's time to explore the diverse world of Geography. In Geography there are 5 themes: location, human and environment interaction, region, place and movement. We will use all that we learn to search and find the Mighty Miami tribe.

The Mighty Miami Indian tribe lived long ago in the state that lives right above you and me. That's right, Indiana. More specifically one village was was Vincennes, Ind, which is located at 38 degrees North and 87 degrees West. This is just a big way of saying exactly where in the world they lived. They lived near a strong river called the Wabash River. So if you could hear the river flowing strong, you were sure be right on the tail of the Mighty Miamis.

Looking at exactly where people are using the fancy degrees called latitude and longitude is called absolute location. If you say they live near a landmark or place, like the river near the Mighty Miamis, that is known as relative location. Both absolute and relative location fit under the first theme of Geography: location. Location tells you were in the world something is.

In the Mighty Miami village, the Indians built dome shaped houses covered in bark called Wigwams. Their village was surrounded by fields of corn as corn was what Mighty Miamis grew most of. The land held many animals and resources for the tribe. There were deers for jerky, bears to make clothes out of, and a plentiful supply of wood for building and cooking. If you were to be walking along the Wabash River and come across a village of Wigwams you could be sure you had found the Might Miami's village. \

The Mighty Miamis building their Wigwams on the land is called a cultural landscape or the effect the people have had on the land. This can be things like building skyscrapers or cutting down trees to make things. The Mighty Miamis having to grow corn because that is what grows best on the land is an example of the effect the environment has on the people living there. Both the the human and environmental effect is known as the second theme of Geography: Human/Environmental Interaction. This theme describes the effect the land and people have on each other.

The Mighty Miamis lived in the region of the state that is considered the South West area. Compared to the whole United States they lived in the Midwest. They also lived in a humid subtropical climate. They had hot, summers; the kind perfect for swimming. Their winters were cold but bearable. Warm enough for Mom to let you play in the snow. They got plenty of rain through the year. There were sure to be puddles for kids like you to jump in.

If you search on the map for the Mighty Miamis you would use the north, south, and west to find their geographical region. When searching on foot if you live in an area where its hot, cool, and really rainy, you might live in an area just live the Mighty Miamis or even the same area with them. The third theme of Geography: Region. Region is the area people live in that can be described by the climate or the place compared to other places. This would be like the Miamis lived in the South West area compared to their state and the Midwest of the country.

Many of the Mighty Miami Indians were farmers' growing most of their own food. The men would go off to war while the women stayed home and collected crops and took care of the home. They would use animal skin for their clothes made by the women. The whole tribe would gather in Powwows where they would all tell stories and dance. If you hear loud singing in strange language and see people wearing tan animal skin dresses you might be in the place of the Mighty Miamis.

All of these types of things are the Mighty Miami's culture. They fit under the theme of geography: Place. Place is the culture of where people live. This is things like the language the people speak, the clothes they wear, or the type of government over that area. Also place includes the description of the land the culture in on. The place of the Mighty Miamis could be described as a wooded area on the river with native people wearing animal skin clothes ad having Powwows.

The MIghty Miamis would walk almost everywhere they went. They lived very far away for any other villages so it took s great amount of time to get from place to place. When going very far the Miamis would travel by canoe along the river. If there was any news to be spread from village to village with other tribes it went by mouth and very slowly. To get news on the Indians you would have to listen very close and look for those traveling by canoe. If you can find this, your on the trail of the Mighty Miamis.

The way that news, ideas and people move fits under the fifth theme of Geography: Movement. Movement is how things like sicknesses, ideas, equipment, cultures, and people move and spread out. This can be by way of touching, TVs, cars, trucks, planes, or radio.

Now you know allll about the five themes of Geography. There is Location, Human/ Environmental Interaction, Region, Place, and Movement. Using all of these things, you can discover many new things, like the life of the Mighty Miamis and where they lived or even about the live of people today in far off places. Pick a place and use all five themes of Geography and you may discover things that will blow your mind.
