S: Our Family 2010
We started off the year by spending three weeks in Bucerias, Mexico, just north of Puerto Vallarta. Escaping the rainy Northwest for warmer climates is always a treat at this time of year! I was about five months pregnant with Pearl. We were happy to have Claud and Michele join us for a week.
We took the bus into Puerto Vallarta to walk along the Malecon a couple of times. It was fun to see the sculptures, watch the sand artists, and listen to waves crash upon the shore beneath the seawall.
Peregrine sipping a raspado on a hot afternoon in Puerto Vallarta. | Nearly every day we walked from our condo to the center of Bucerias. | We bought crepes from this beautiful happy woman on the zocalo. | The kids were very happy to have a pool just a few steps outside the door! | Peregrine cuts in... | This living archway was on the way to the town center.
We often walked by the shop of two brothers from Oaxaca. Their family shears sheep, dyes their wool with roots, berries, and minerals, spins it into yarn, and weaves these beautiful rugs on traditional wooden looms.
At a pollo asado restaurant in Rincon de Guayabitos. | Another sculpture along the malecon in Puerto Vallarta. | We went up to Sayulita one day and watched the surfers. | "Bird Papa" in front of a little coffee shop we often walked past. | Tacos! We ate lots and lots of them! | The pool at our condo; most days we went swimming a couple times.
Our first stop was a coffee plantation. | We took a day trip to the small mountain town of San Sebastian del Oeste. Once a thriving mining center, it is now a quiet, charming little place that captivated us. | Ripe coffee cherries grow beneath huge citrus and avocado trees. | Some local fauna. | Bananas! | The resident parrot. | Coffee beans. | Workers sorting coffee beans. | Flor de noche buena, poinsettias growing like trees in the zocalo. | Agave fields nearby.
We enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets and felt we'd stepped back into a simpler time. The town was beautifully kept and cared for. We smelled fresh baked goods and came upon this window into a little bakery, open to the street. Of course we had to stop in to sample some freshly baked Mexican pastries.
We walked up and down the narrow streets and out of town where we crossed this bridge. | Peregrine and Poppy enjoyed running around the zocalo in the bright sunshine. | Nana and Papa rested on a bench while the kids ran off some energy. | We stopped in at a little hotel with the most enchanting courtyard. A year later we realized the dream of staying here. | Peregrine was thrilled to see lots of "vaqueros" out and about in San Sebastian. The horse seems to be a common mode of transport. | We ate lunch overlooking the zocalo and with a view of the church and mountains beyond.
We spent an afternoon in Rincon de Guayabitos where we played in the ocean and then took a boat out to look for whales. We were all excited to see them up close, so beautiful!
Another day we spent at a ranch near Bucerias. While Peregrine and Erik went on a horse ride, Poppy, Raphael, and I played in the swimming pool. The kids enjoyed the water slides. The pools in Mexico are built with kids in mind! We enjoyed walking around the ranch and were interested to find a starfruit tree.
Our last evening in Mexico we splurged on a nice dinner at Aduato's on the beach. It's not every day you get to watch the sun set over the Pacific!
Peregrine gave himself a haircut... and loved it! | Paula, Shelley, me, and all our kids!
Happy Fifth Birthday, Poppy Joy Girl!
It was a busy season with lots of celebrations! Within a few days we celebrated Poppy's birthday, Raphael's birthday, and Pascha. A few weeks later we had dragon pancakes in honor of St. George. | Happy Birthday little Raphi Boy! Raphael is TWO!
Claud came for a week to help Erik add an extra bedroom before Pearl was born. | We went on a field trip to Wild Ones Youth Ranch where we learned about wild mustang horses and the native peoples of this area. | Right before we cut Poppy's long hair. | Raphi loved all the tools!
Raphi made this "tool" and walked around and used it for days. Peregrine bought a sombrero in Mexico and wore it all over the place. There were Raphi's last days of being the baby of the family. Our new bedroom was finished just in time!
Peregrine took Tap & Tumbling and Poppy took Creative Dance. We loved watching their performance. I was in the early stages of labor at the recital! Pearl was born the next morning.
The final days of waiting for our Pearl to be born.
Brigid Pearl Annabelle Groomer May 18, 2010, 9:21 AM 7 lbs 6 oz Perfectly Precious | After having con-tractions every 10-15 minutes all night, labor really kicked in when I got up around 5. We got to the birth center at 6:45 and I was already at 8cm. Along with Erik, my mom, Alyssa, and Gloria all shared love and support. Poppy ran in and out, bringing me flowers and cards and telling me she loved me. After just a few hours of hard labor, Pearl was born into the loving hands of her Daddy at 9:21AM. God answered all of our prayers for a safe delivery and a healthy baby and mama. We rested at the birth center for several hours before coming home with our new blessing from God!
From the moment of her birth, and even before, she was surrounded by an abundance of love!
In June, Jacob, Jackie, and JoJo came to visit from Alaska, and Josh and Annie came down from Portland. It's always special to get everyone together, and of course we were happy to introduce them to our new little addition. We were also excited to learn that Josh and Annie were expecting their first baby! Another little cousin on the way!
Just as Jesus was brought to the temple when he was forty days old, so we brought Brigid Pearl to church for a special blessing and to present her to the Lord on her fortieth day.
A summer hike along McDowell Creek Falls outside of Sweethome.
Raphi with his godfather, "Papa" Luke. | Surrounded by love on my thirty-fifth birthday!
Pearl on her Mama Quilt. | We took the kids on a picnic to the hill where we were engaged nine years earlier. | Three Months | Poppy's Pillowcase Dress.
 Wildlife Safari, Winston, Oregon
Cider pressing with friends. | Peregrine sold cocoa to help Haiti! | Raphi and his godparents.
 Northern Lights Christmas Tree Farm
Aaaaargh, Matey! We had a Pie-rate party for Peregrine's Eighth Birthday, complete with a pie contest. He presided over the judging and awarded ribbons in various categories. Happy birthday, Peregrine the Pie-rate!
Baptized into Christ, November 4, 2010
In November Poppy lost her first tooth and Pearl's first one came in. Nana and Papa came for a visit, and Pearl was six months!
 Happy Saint Nicholas Day!
Poppy with Annabelle, the doll I made her. | Our amaryllis bloomed just in time for Christmas! | Peregrine put on a show with his new magic kit. | Erik gave me this Indian style painting of Zaccheus. I love it!
