1: What is a thunderstorm? A thunderstorm is a type of severe weather that produces lightning strikes and booms of thunder. How do they form? The sun heats the Earth's surface and the heat from the Earth then heats the atmosphere. In a low pressure zone, the heat travels up since it is lighter than the surrounding air, when the air is unstable, the water vapor in the air condenses to make the clouds. The clouds become electrically charged and produce lighting and thunder causing this violent storm.
