FC: Native Americans Their past and present Aden S.

Some newly discovered artifacts are leading to new theories about when the first people came. The Paleo Indians worked hard to get their food. They would have thrown lots of spears to get their share, but the Archaic Indians invented a thing called the atlatl, stick thrower or ax. The Archaic Indians learned how to store food and farm which made them more sedentary {more lazy and relaxed}. The Paleo and Archaic Indians are truly amazing.

There are three main Native American language groups in Virginia. They are Algonquian, Siouan, and Iroquoian. The Algonquian language group was part of the Powhatan. The Algonquian groups lived on the coast. The Siouan, also known as the Monacans, grew crops and hunted a lot. They also made mounds of dirt for their dead. The Iroquois lived in the Appalachian Plateau region and in the southern part of the tidewater region. There are about 80,000 Iroquois living modernly today. The native Americans are awesome.

Native Americans were not treated fairly. 50,000 indians died due to European diseases. Armed conflicts lead to land reducement for the indians. In 1646 and 1677, treaties were signed for peace between settlers and Native Americans. The Pamunky and Mattoponi tribes still honor the treaties today. Only 8 tribes have been recognized by the state, and they are working to become federally recognized. The racial integrity act caused a lot of problems for the Native Americans. The racial integrity act is an act that says that a colored person cannot marry a white person. Native Americans were not allowed in public schools. I believe the way native Americans were treated very poorly and that they should get a fair chance at life.

Bob McDonnell, Virginia’s governor, has recently declared November as American Indian Month. McDonnell announced at a meeting, “We shouldn’t just look at their past, we should look at both their past and their present.” Doug Domenech, Virginia’s Secretary of Natural Resources, stated, “Every time we have a chance we should pay respect to them. We honored to work with them.” The purpose of the meeting was also to update the SOL (Standards of Learning) archives so that children can know more about Native Americans. Five out of eleven state recognized tribes are federally recognized, and the other six are still working toward getting federal recognition. I think the Native Americans have worked hard for liberty and freedom.
