Lifestyles and Technology of Past Peoples (Paleo, Archaic, and Eastern Woodland) The hunter gatherers must have come from Russia through Berengia which led them to America. They followed their prey which led them to America. Their best technology to catch prey was the Atlatl. The atlatl was something that the Archaic tribe made. They made it from a tree branch and put grooves in it. They added a handle and used it to throw an arrow. From then to now, a lot of technology had been developed. The first arrowheads were found in New Mexico and they named them Clovis Points. Then they dug a little deeper and they named them Pre Clovis points.
The Indians came about 16,000 years ago. The three tribes were the Algonquian, Siovan, and the Iroquoian. The Algonquian lived in the Coastal Plain region. Forty tribes lived there and thirty-two of them came together. The Siovan are great at building mounds and the mounds are made for the dead people. The Iroquoian tribes lived far away from each other. The Iroquoian tribes lived in New York and North Carolina. The Powhatan and Iroquoian tribes worked very well together and called themselves the Homomoshchchi.
The Chief's job was to teach their history and to protect their rights. The two tribes out of eight tribes in Virginia were the only tribes remaining on a reservation. These tribes were the Pamunkey and the Mattaponi. They lived near a river. The river to them was sacred. They also paid taxes every November on Thanksgiving. The Pamunkey and the Mattaponi respected taxes.
A long time ago, all your birth certificate would say was if you were white or colored. If you were an Indian, you must go to a different state to get an education or the church would find you a school. The Indians continued to learn about their heritage. The people in the public schools thought that the Indians attacked the settlers, but not that the settlers attacked the Indians.
Governor Bob McDonnell declared November as American Indian Heritage month and he signed proclamations for each of the eleven state recognized tribes. The government of the tribes and the state of Virginia work together. The Indians are a very big part of our history and a part of our present. The government is trying to increase the standards of learning for the Indians.
