1: Some people say Europeans invented slavery, that is false. Slavery was already used in Africa, as a punishment for crimes. The Europeans didn't start it. Some people believe that slaves were sold against their will, but the rulers would sell their people for their
2: own personal gain. Prisoners were sold as slaves as well as war captives. Slave traders wanted and more slaves, so they started kidnapping Africans at random women and children. All Africans were forced to work in fields and leave their children by their selves. Some kids were to be the lookout for slave traders.
3: When caught slaves were shipped with cargo to different countries. Under deck is where they were kept. Below the deck, in a cramped ship chained to each other until they got where they were going. | Few of them survived the voyage through the middle passage. Some died of starvation. Some died of disease. Some of them where whipped to death if they didn't move fast enough or disobeyed rules.
4: Some slaves lived to tell the story of what happened to them. For example Olaudah Equiano. Olaudah was just a child when he was taken. He heard the cry of trouble, but him and his sister had no time to run. Olaudah and his sister were roughly seized. The traders stuffed a dirty cloth in their mouth, so they couldn't cry out. They were stuffed in a sack and carried away. Olaudah and his sister was separated
5: Olaudah later joined the slave traders and won his freedom. Later he began to write about his | experiences as a slave. When he sailed to England he met other Africans that were enslaved. Eventually Olaudah earned enough money to sail back to his homeland.
