FC: Transatlantic Slave Trade

This map shows the main slave trade routes to Europe, Asia and the Americas. The transatlantic slave trade was the biggest distribution of any people in history.

At the beginning of the Transatlantic slave trade, Portuguese explorers kid-napped people from the west coast of Africa and brought them to the Europe and sold them into slavery. In 1503, the Spanish took the first captives to the New World. | Later, African tribal rulers and rich Africans began to sell their own people into the slave trade. Kings and businessmen would trade poor Africans and captives for guns, gold and products from Europe and American, that they could not easily find in Africa.

The Transatlantic slave trade hurt Africa. Slave trade created a lot of conflict between tribes. Emporers and greedy businessmen made a lot of money, and Africans became poor. The number of Africans decreased as more and more Africans were captured and sent to the Americas. As older Africans died, less Africans were being born.

During the slave trade, around 12,000,000 were enslaved from Africa. Of that about 15% died on slave ships on their way to the Americas.

According to Hakim Adi, the slave trade made few African rich, and caused wars, exploitation, and the suffering of millions of people in Africa.

Works Cited Dr Hakim Adi Lovejoy, Paul E. Transformations in Slavery (Cambridge University Press, 2000).
