FC: Derain versus Vlaminck
1: TIMELINE 1876 The telephone was patented by Alexander Graham Bell. 1893 New Zealand is the first country to give women the right to vote. 1902 The teddy bear was invented by a Russian immigrant named after Theodore Roosevelt. 1904 Teabags were invented by Thomas Sullivan 1905 Einstein published the Theory of Relativity 1907 French citizen Paul Conru designs the helicopter. 1908 Einstein suggests the quantum theory and Aisin Gioro Puyi becomes the last emperor of China 1912 On April 15th the Titanic sinks 1914 WWI starts on August 4th. 1918 Germany surrenders on November 11th in Compiengne, France. 1919 June 28 the Treaty of Versailles is signed officially ending WWI 1921 Johnson & Johnson launch the band-aid bandage. 1933 Ruth Wakefield invents the chocolate cookie and Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany. 1939 France and the U.K. declare war on Germany starting WWII. 1940 On June 15 German soldiers enter Paris 1941 Japan attacks Pearl Harbor launching the US into WWII 1944 On August 25 Allied troops regain Paris 1945 Germany surrenders in May. America bombs Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which leads to Japan's surrender. 1950 Korean war starts and Mr.Potato head debuts. 1952 Ian Fleming's James Bond series starts with Casino Royale 1956 Morocco and Tunisia gain independence from France. 1958 NASA is founded.
2: Andre Derain Born June 10, 1876 in Chatou, France. His father was a well off cremier so money wasn't that much of a problem. His parents recognized his artistic talents and liked them but chose a different career for Derain. They sent him to an engineering college which just happen to be by the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Derain took some free art lessons there. He studied painting in Paris at the Académie Carriere from 1898 to 1899 Influential friends; Maurice de Vlaminck, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse He was accepted by the Salon d’Automne in 1905. Married in 1906 to Alice. Death: struck by a car in 1954 and had an eye infection. He died from complications after he was stuck by the car. Actually he died in a hospital in Garches.
3: Maurice de Vlaminck Born April 4, 1876, Paris, France Parents were music teachers Self-taught artist Influential friends; Andre Derain, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse Accepted into the Salon d’Automne in 1905. He got married in his late teens to Susan Berly. During his life he basically did anything to pay the bills and get a bit of extra cash. Mostly he did creative jobs but he was in the military for a time and wanted to be a professional cyclist. He didn’t live extravagantly but he did enough to keep his family afloat. Death: died in Rueil-la-Gadelire on 11 October 1958 from natural causes.
4: Early Career for Derain The paintings of the early career are all painted in oil. This section of his career is fauvist and not only is it fauvism, it has elements of cubism in it too. Derain mostly paints landscapes in his early years. His color palette is definitely cooler colors with vibrant blues and greens.
5: Early Career for Vlaminck In the beginning Vlaminck painted with oil and was fauvist. He painted with warmer colors with vibrant reds and yellows. Also he mostly painted landscapes but had a few portraits scatter in his early years. His paintings have elements of blocking and cubism.
6: Middle Career Again Derain worked with oils for painting. His style for the middle of his career is definitely cubist. | You can tell this from the color change and during this part Derain changes to dark and earth tones. Also during this phase Derain paints portraits, landscapes, and some still lifes.
7: Middle Career for Vlaminck During this part of the career he painted again with oil. During this period his style would be blockism. | The colors in the middle of his career were cooler colors and darker colors. Vlaminck at this time does mostly landscapes though there are a few portraits mixed in.
8: Late Career Although Derain stays constant with oil for the paintings the style is quite different. The style for Derain's late career has some cubist qualities but it looks Impressionalist. | The colors again are earth tones but Derain incorporates lighter colors to his paintings in this phase. The types of paintings which Derain paints portraits, people, and he does have a series of nudes.
9: Late Career Vlaminck is still using oil paint but his style is fairly different. This style has elements of blockism, cubism, and expressionism within his later years. In his later years Vlaminck paints landscapes and still-lives. The colors are still dark with earth tones. Though in these later years he plays with the contrast between light and dark.
