BC: Nicole | As our target audience are young teenagers and young adults who are interested in R&B, likewise Rihanna and Beyonce's audience, we will take aspects from their star image to construct for our own artist. These include a young artist, to relate to the audience, who is also attractive. Similarly in Rihanna's music videos, she is portrayed as fun and carefree and our artist will be seen as such. Furthermore, she will also subvert to female stereotypes to an extent and be depicted as dominant

1: Star Image | The 'star image' is the construction of artists by their record labels to appeal to a certain target audience (Dyer). There are three main features that make a star. These include the star as a construction, the star as a commodity and the star as an ideology. The star as a construction is where the image of a star has been created and marketed through advertising to the specific needs and wants of the target audience. The star as a commodity is where record labels construct, invest and sell the star to meet audience demand. Finally, the star as a ideology is where artists represent a set of values and beliefs that relate to the target audience.
2: Rihanna's image provides her audience's need for a young, attractive, fashionable artist they can relate to and emulate. Young females aspire to be her and mimick her style whereas young males aspire to be with her as she is objectified through the male gaze (Mulvey). | Rihanna
3: Beyonce is another artist who is young, attractive and objectified through the male gaze. However she subverts from female stereotypes to an extent, appealing to her female audience. She is also portrayed as an independent, dominant woman, aspirational for her female audience | Beyonce
