1: what PAINTINGS were famous? | THE AMERICAN GOTHIC | Sara Kolthoff | One of the most famous paintings of the 1930's was painted in Iowa. The American Gothic was painted by Grant wood in 1930. The painting is a cottage designed in the Gothic Revival style that he found in Eldon, Iowa. He painted people he thought might live in that house. He had his sister model the women and his dentist model the man. | what Sculptures were famous? | Mount Rushmore | One of the most famous sculptures of all time in America is Mount Rushmore. Cutzon Borglum started carving it in 1927 and his son finished it between 1934 and 1939. This mountain is in Keystone, South Dakota. The mountain features George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It represents the first 150 years of of the history of the United States.

The Great depression was taking place at the time and there was a lot of economic problems so people showed their expressions through images. It was a way for them to escape their grief and sorrows. Every painting portrayed different expressions because everyone during that time were suffering in different ways.
