FC: EARTHQUAKES By Tori Bodycomb and Desmond Kern

In 123 BC Cheng Heng invented the seismograph. It was made of bronze and a tiny bit of silver. It was built like a vase with miniature dragons molded to the sides. In the dragons' mouth there were tiny marble like balls. On the lower sides there were toads with their mouths open. When there was movement in the ground the dragons would drop the balls into the toads' mouth.

This is one of many buildings in China that is effected by an earthquake. It may seem strong but when it's hit by a seismic wave stronger than 6.3, it's all over. | During this earthquake the structure is ruptured and the building collapsed.

Every day, eight-thousand earthquakes occur. Every year 2,920,000 occur in random places across the globe.

This house is one of many destroyed in the Chile earthquake. This fence was bent and broken in the Japanese earthquake. This house was also damaged in the Japan earthquake.

Chile 1988: disaster struck. it was a regular day for everyone in Chile until the 9.5 earthquake hit. The magnitude was so strong that it caused the Earth's axis to move 3"!

The earthquake in Chile made all this devastation real. Well, except for the one to the left. It's from the San Fransisco bay area earthquake. These were all obviously very deadly earthquakes. the weird thing about the bay area earthquake is that the stadium, which was on the epicenter, wasn't damaged at all. But the areas around it were completely crumbled.

This hotel was completely destroyed in the Sichuan earthquake. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake wiped the unprepared province Sichuan off its feet. 70,000 people died, and 18,000 people went missing. | The San Francisco bay area earthquake was one of the most peculiar but destructive earthquakes in California. It had a magnitude of 7.8 and 700 people died. But some archivists said it was closer to 3,000 deaths. Also, 28,000 buildings were damaged.

An epicenter is the point in the ground that is directly above the hypocenter. The focus is the place in the ground where all the seismic waves are.(their radius) | A hypocenter is the spot in the ground where all the seismic waves come from. (more info about hypocenter next page.)

A hypocenter is the point below the epicenter, and is where all the seismic waves come out.

There are sixteen plates. The plates are:The North American Plate, The South American Plate, The African Plate, The Caribbean Plate, The | Pacific Plate, Nazca Plate, Cocos Plate, Juan de Fuca Plate, Indian Plate,Philippine Plate, Arabian Plate, Eurasian Plate, Indo-Australian, Scotia Plate, and Antarctica Plate. | The Ring of Fire is shaped like a horseshoe and is 40,000 km long.90% of the world's earthquakes happen on the Ring of Fire. The eastern part of the ring is formed by the Nazca Plate and the Cocos Plate.
