1: Cities or towns we visited in Portugal & Spain June 5-24, 2011

2: Views from the top floor sunroom of our B&B in an old classy district of Lisbon. A renovated family home built by the grandfather of our host. | Lisbon, Portugal

4: Portugal is known for it's football & it's fado music. Fado means fate. Singers usually wear black and sing sad soulful music. Dinner was a rip-off at this high-end Fado Club

7: Jeronimos Monastery - Lisbon | Pastries of Belem - originally made by nuns in the monastery, but sold in outside shop since 1837. Delicious custard cups

26: Flamenco dancing is a passionate cultural dance performed throughout Spain

27: The Giralda - by surface area it is the largest cathedral in the world - has 34 ramps wide enough for 2 horses to pass | Saw the tomb of Christopher Columbus inside the Giralda

28: We walked up 34 ramps in the Giralda for great views of the city. The ramps are wide enough for 2 horses to pass

33: The challenge of driving in Arcos, Spain - even turning the side mirrors in, did not help!!

34: Jerez de la Fronterra Train station | See the pitcher with the tiny spout - for pouring olive oil on toast for breakfast - then served with tomatoes

35: Loved staying with David at our B&B. He visited with us over a drink on the upstairs patio. He recommended La Blanca for tapas.... & had the lanterns all lit when we came home

36: We watched families strolling by with old world charm, while we ate tappas | Jerez is one of the world's largest producers of sherry.

38: Beautiful Nerja - on the Costa del Sol - southern coast of Spain

40: Delightful dinner with a personal touch - young husband cooks, & wife serves! Views from the pool/patio on top of our hotel 1 block from the beach! | Goodbye Nerja

41: Granada, Spain - 2 hours inland from the coast - views from the bus window as we entered town - see the snow on the mountains peaks in June

42: The long uphill slope to our B&B - built in 1650. See the dark door in the background & the big peep hole ( right)

44: Alhambra - the greatest remaining Moorish Palace in Europe. Attracts 8,000 visitors / day. We got tickets 3 months in advance

50: Our vibrant Spanish speaking hostess at our hostel & her home | Madrid | Our hostel was on this busy street in Madrid We couldn't believe the packed streets on Sat night

51: Downtown Plaza Mayor - a short walk from our hostel | Mother of the bride in Madrid | A glimpse of a modern Madrid (the outskirts of the city)

53: Totally amazed at the choreography & skill of the matador

54: George was so excited to visit the REAL Madrid football stadium & Hall of Fame | Press Room

55: Daytrip from Madrid - Toledo -used to be the capital of Spain | Toledo is famous for it's marzipan ( which I bought from this nun), and for it's knifes ( I love the one I bought)

59: Segovia - famous for it's Roman Aqueduct built in 50 AD | Segovia - daytrip from Madrid

60: Beautiful Cathedral of Segovia - forms the center-piece of the town

65: Gaudi Park in Barcelona was "a little gaudy"

67: Sagrada Familia by Gaudi Construction began 1882 - expected to be completed in 2026 | There are 3 facades to the "temple". Above: The Passion Facade

68: This Passion Facade is so expressive! The Gloria Facade is under construction

69: The Nativity Facade of the Sagrada Familia

70: Gaudi found inspiration in nature for many of his architectural ideas . Can you see how tree branches leave the trunk on the pillars

71: Packed beach right in Barcelona | We enjoyed this quiet beach north of the city | Topless women

72: Our B & B, with Kiku & Jon, was walking distance from Las Ramblas. Kiku with breakfast ready | Hallway at B & B

73: Trains were absolutely packed at midnight as the city converged on the beach to celebrate Sant Joan day, June 24. Bonfires were lit on the beach, & firecrackers went off everywhere, including a few feet from our feet. It was one massive party! | Bullring- but the Catalonians have outlawed bullfights in Barcelona | Goodbye Barcelona - Slovakia here we come!
