1: Cities & towns we visited in Portugal & Spain June 5-24, 2011

2: Lisbon, Portugal | Views from the top floor sunroom of our B&B in an old classy area of Lisbon. Build by the grandfather of our host

4: Portugal is known for it's football and it's fado music. Fado means fate. Singers usually wear black and sing sad soulful music. This Fado Club was very expensive - complimentary appetizers were NOT complimentary!

7: Monument to the Discoverers of Portugal An elevator ride to the top gave views of the river & the city

8: St Jeronimos Castle - the first pastries of Belem were made by the nuns here

9: Pastries of Belem - are delcious custard cups. Sold outside the monastary since 1837

26: Flamenco is a passionate cultural dance performed in Spain. We were impressed!

27: The Giralda - a magnificent cathedral. By square footage is the largest in the world. - has 34 ramps to the top - ramps wide enough for 2 horses to pass each other

33: The challenge of driving in Arcos! Even with the side mirrors turned in, the van could not get through.

35: Loved staying with David at his B&B. He visited over a glass of wine with us on the top floor patio, recommended La Blanca for tappas... & had all the candles in the floor lanterns lit when we came home

36: Ate tappas & watched families strolling by with old world charm | Jerez is one of the worlds largest producers of sherry

38: Beautiful Nerja - on the Costa del Sol on the south coast of Spain

40: Celebrating Art's 71st birthday at a little restaurant - husband cooked & wife served ....& sang with George (below)

42: Granada Spain - 2 hours inland from the coast - These views are from the bus window as we entered town - Note the snow on the mountain tops

43: The long uphill climb to our B&B in Granada - built in 1650. Interesting wide door with huge "peep-hole"

44: Our bedroom - Breakfast was served outside in the inner courtyard by our host Christian Most

45: Sacromonte - the gypsy area of Granada-up the hill from the center of town - Alive at night with flamenco shows & 'bargains" - watch your pocket

46: Alhambra - the greatest remaining Moorish palace in Europe - Attracts 8,000 visitors / day. - Purchased our tickets 3 months in advance

49: A small plaza very close to our B&B, where we stopped to enjoy the ambience of tappas,musicians & passerbys

50: Elevator up to our 6th floor hostel our vibrant hospitable Spanish hostess rented out rooms in her home | We couldn't believe the packed streets on Saturday night | Our hostel was situated on this busy downtown street | Madrid

51: Plaza Mayor - the heart of downtown Madrid | Mother of the bride

53: George & Art were really excited to tour the REAL football stadium & Hall of Fame Rated the best team of the 20th century | Press Room

54: Loved the Chocolateria | Bullring or Plaza de Torres

56: Day trip from Madrid Toledo used to be the capital of Spain | City Gate | Attractive brick work on this hotel

57: Toledo is famous for it's marzipan sold here by the nuns, and for it's metal work - mostly knives

60: Center plaza downtown Toledo | Beautiful brickwork on the train station & tile design inside

61: Daytrip from Madrid - Segovia - famous for it's Roman Aqueduct built in 50 AD

62: Alcazar in Segovia reminded us of Disneyland

63: The beautiful Cathedral of Segovia forms the centerpiece of the town

64: Bracelona Spain | Barcelona Colon located at the harbor end of the Ramblas

66: Gaudi Park - at times felt gaudy

68: Memories of Las Ramblas | Unusual architectureof Gaudi

69: Morryssom's - our favorite place to eat for the right price!!

70: Sagrada Familia by Gaudi Construction began in 1882, & is expected to be finished in 2026 There are 3 facades to the temple- 'The Passion' (above)

71: The Passion Facade of the Sagrada Familia So expressive!!

72: Passion Facade | The Nativity Facade was the first to be completed. The Gloria Facade is under construction

73: Gaudi found inspiration in nature for many of his architectural ideas. Can you see branches or "knots" of trees in the design of the pillars

74: Beach was packed right in Barcelona | We enjoyed this quiet beach north of the city

75: Hallway at B&B | Our B&B with Kiku & Jon was walking distance to Las Ramblas. Breakfast waiting for us!

76: It was a party we will never forget! St. Joan's Day, June 24. The metro trains were packed as people converged on the beach to lite bonfires and set off firecrackers - 'everywhere'

77: Bullring - but Catalonians have banned bullfights | Goodbye Spain - Slovakia here we come! | Leaving our B&B
