S: Camping Adventures of Ben and Andy and Mom April 2014
BC: Made with Love by Mom For Ben and Andy
FC: April 14-19 2014
Once upon a time, there were two young boys who enjoyed camping. Since they loved the outdoors so much, their mom decided to take them (and their dog) on a week long camping trip to the mountains of NC over spring break. They were both excited and ready for the adventure. In spite of the bad weather, the three of them headed out on Monday afternoon.
After stopping to run a few errands, the three campers got on the interstate and headed west. After a couple of hours of driving/riding, they decided to stop and camp for the night. They found a fun campground in Mocksville, NC named Lake Myers RV Park. They had a tent site but nobody else was tent camping so the adventurers had the whole tent section to themselves. The sky looked like rain was on the way so they quickly set up a tent and extra canopy for added protection.
Mmmm!! Our first S'mores of the trip! | Once all the camping gear was set up, they all built a campfire so they could roast marshmallows. The boys gathered firewood and the fire was just right for roasting marshmallows and making S'mores. The S'mores were oooohhh so yummy! They ate a little dinner with their S'mores and decided to venture out and explore the campground a little more.
The excited campers soon discovered that the campground had a lot to offer. Unfortunately, by the time they discovered all this, most of the things were not available to do. Some fun activities they did find to do were tetherball and a playground. The boys also brought their 3DS's along for the car ride and played those for a while. The rain finally started falling but that didn't slow these guys down. Ben and Andy played in the rain and wanted to run for a while so they chose to run back to the campsite, in the rain.
Tuesday morning, after a good night's sleep, Ben, Andy and Mom went back to explore more of the campground during business hours and during daylight. They were able to play mini golf and play in the arcade. The foosball table that gave out bouncy balls with each goal scored was a favorite! The mini golf was fun but the rain from the night before left large puddles on most of the holes. For two adventurous boys, puddles were often a bonus and made the game more fun!
Tuesday evening, Mom and the boys arrived at Yogi in the Smokies Campground just in time to check in and meet Yogi and Boo Boo in person! It began to snow a little as they pulled in to register and continued to snow most of the evening. It's a good thing Mom rented a cabin for the night! It was mighty cold but everybody stayed nice and warm in their sleeping bags. Grandma and Grandpa Coburn happen to work at Yogi in the Smokies and took everyone out to dinner that night. After dinner, everyone hung out in the cabin and played dominoes. Grandma and Grandpa were so happy and excited to see Ben and Andy. They enjoyed every minute they got to spend with them!
Wednesday morning, Mom, Ben and Andy decided to explore and see what Cherokee, North Carolina had to offer. The first place they went was Mingo Falls. It was a short hike up a lot of stairs. The view was amazing though and worth every step they climbed. Mingo Falls is a 120 feet waterfall on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Halley (their dog) joined them on this hike. It is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Appalachian mountains.
Gem Mining! | The second adventure of the day was gem mining. Both Ben and Andy looked for gems with Mom's help. Ben found several Ruby's and Sapphires while Andy found a variety of several different gems. The jeweler next to the gem mine identified their stones for them and explained to them about different sizes and different ways gems could be cut.
Please Do Not Feed the Bears | X | BEARS | After gem mining, they went and saw and fed live bears. They even got to feed a baby brown bear. She was so soft and adorable. The big bears were very fun to feed too. They tried to catch the food as the boys dropped it.
After feeding the bears, there was a small petting zoo of goats. The goats seemed very anxious to be fed as soon as the boys put a quarter in the food machine. The goats came in all sizes but the larger goats tried their best to get whatever food they could. Ben and Andy tried to make every effort they could to ensure the smaller goats would get some treats too.
Guess what the boys found after the goats? Another mini golf course. Ben and Andy seemed to really enjoy playing mini golf so they took a chance and played this course. They thought it was pretty fun, though those two brothers can be somewhat competitive. Every stroke counts on each course and there is always a close score at the end!
Wednesday evening was spent playing basketball, doing craft activities with Grandma, going on the Yogi Wagon ride, and playing in the campground. That night, everyone sat around the campfire roasting hot dogs and marsh- mallows and making S'mores. This was another night in the cabin. Mom is the champion marshmallow roaster but Ben and Andy both got very good at getting those marshmallows just right for eating S'mores!
After S'mores and campfire time on Wednesday night, Grandma and Grandpa came in to play some Uno. Sitting around playing games and spending time together was what this camping trip was all about. Thursday morning, Ben, Andy and Mom headed to TN. They stopped a few times along the scenic byway to enjoy the breath taking views and then found another mini golf course in Pigeon Forge, TN. It was called Fantasy Golf and the boys played 36 holes. After golf, they began to look for a place to camp for the night. They found a campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
AS they traveled the roads of TN and NC, they found several beautiful stops to enjoy. They visited Clingman's Dome and found large icicles all along the road on the rocks. The weather was pretty cold during parts of the trip but finding all the icicles helped them realize just how cold the mountains can get.
The campground was very fun because there were other boys in campsites on each side of the Chwalik's site. All of the boys played together for hours until it was time to head to the tent and quiet down for the night.
The boys played dodge ball and other games with a soccer ball. The other boys' names were Brayden and Myers. They played and played and played for hours.
On Friday evening, the campers headed back to Jellystone Park to spend more time with Yogi and Boo Boo. This would be the last night of camping and they slept in a tent again on this final night. It was fun to go back to Jellystone Park because Ben and Andy discovered Boo Boo's arcade. Surprisingly enough, the arcade had the same foosball/bouncy ball machine that the first campground did. Ben and Andy played that game long enough to win 117 bouncy balls! While they played that, Mom enjoyed playing Galaga and Ms. Pacman and Frogger. Those weren't exactly what most people would call camping activities but they sure were fun to play! Yogi and Boo Boo were extra excited to see Ben and Andy again too. Boo Boo seems to be extra strong and picked Ben up. Ben LOVES Boo Boo. Andy loves Yogi. Yogi and Boo Boo love those boys! | 195
Saturday came and it was finally time to say good bye. There was an Easter Egg Decorating Contest in which Andy and Mom won most original. Mom drew and painted a yogi on the egg. Ben painted ceramics which then inspired Andy to do the same. Grandma and Grandpa were sad to see everybody go but the boys promised to come back another time and bring all their brothers with them next time. So Good Bye for now and we'll see you again soon. Camping Rocks!
