S: Costa Rica Christmas 2010

BC: Adios! | !

FC: Costa Rica Christmas 2010

On the road in Guanacaste. A typical farm scene with a volcano in the background!

Playful pet macaws at a rest stop.

Our 1st stop was the Monteverde Cloud Forest where it was delightfully sunny! | Mike never seems to have his eyes open in pictures.

This was where we saw our first howler monkeys.

The irridescent purple hummingbird is the largest in Costa Rica. We also spotted a hummingbird in its nest. We had a great guide, who even found the elusive Quetzal bird that most people don't get to see.

Plants in the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

At the hummingbird garden outside the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

We took a tour of a coffee plantation outside of Santa Elena. We had coffee and some homemade tortillas made by the owner's mom.

Cute little piggie! | Views from around the plantation.

Views from the coffee plantation outside Santa Elena.

 Ziplining!!! | Have I mentioned I don't like heights?

We're gonna DIE!!! | OK... Maybe not.

We spent 5 days there, saw a leatherback turtle lay her eggs at 4AM on Christmas morning, went on a nature boat ride and mostly relaxed! | On to the Pacific coast at Tamarindo.

The neighborhood cat adopted us. | Howler monkeys in the trees around the hotel. | This grasshopper was at least 5 inches long!

What a cute little baby! | You really don't want to drag your hand in the water on this boat ride. | We saw lots of wildlife on a boat ride through the estuary near Tamarindo.

Our final stop was La Fortuna where we hoped to see the Volcano Arenal. We never saw the volcano because of cloud cover. (Really it's behind those clouds somewhere)... We still had a great time.

This was the closest we got to seeing a volcano, somewhere between Tamarindo and La Fortuna.

We had a banana tree just outside our hotel door that attracted lots of birds. The toucans were smaller and were all beak; they looked like they shouldn't be able to fly.

These flowers were huge, probably 6 inches across.

Soggy and tired, but happy on our final day of white water rafting on the Balsa River.

Notice that Anna is always beaming.

 My favorite pictures.
