FC: Council of Chalcedon
1: This council took place in Chalcedon, Bithynia in Asia Minor. (Present day Turkey) | There were 16-21 separate sessions at the Church of Euphemia. | The Council of Chalcedon was the Forth Ecumentical Council.
2: Pope Leo the Great was the pope at the time. Emperor Marcian asked Pope Leo the Great for permission to call this council. Pope Leo granted permission. Pope Leo wanted the council to be held in Italy, but settled for Chalcedon.
3: This council occured from October 8 451 A.D. to November 1 451 A.D. Emperor Marcian attended this council as well as 500-600 bishops.
4: The main issue discussed was that Jesus is both true man and true God. The Church decided that anyone believing in Monophysitism will be excommunicated. During this council, 28 canons were written as well as the Chalcedonian Creed.
5: The 28 canons included: 3. Prohibits bishops from engaging in business. 9. Limits the ability to accuse a bishop of wrong doing. 15. Requires a deaconess to be at least 40. 19. Requires bishops to conduct a synod twice a year. 25. Requires a new bishop to be ordained within 3 months of election.
