1: Eyer Middle School 2011 | Food, Feasts, And Entertainment

2: Preserving Food | Meats were salted to keep preserved There was no refrigeration so animals were kept near the kitchen until cooked. One method of preserving fish and meat was pickling which they would put fish and meat into salt brines. | Pretty much salt helped preserve foods in ancient times and throughout the middle ages until refrigeration started.

3: Eating food | The main dish they served at feast was beef mutton (sheep).Venison (deer) was served after a good hunt. Food was served in messes, which are two to four dinners. There was no specific server, people just helped themselves with their knifes and spoons. Forks were not popular back in medieval times. The plate they used was called a trencher- a thick slice of brown bread that held food, and fats and sauces soaked into it. It was a disposable plate.

4: King and Nobles Food | Ate exotic foods such as peacocks, crane, and subtley. Subtley was a mix of sugar, paste, marzipan, jelly., painted and molded in the shape of castles or ships. Also ate venison which was deer meat. They ate white bread, which was a sign of high status. At a feast they would usually drink wine. Dessert would be marzipan, a sugary treat.

5: Peasant Food | Ate brown tons of brown bread. They eat about 5.5 pounds a day! Also ate oat-cakes, barley, bannocks, porridge, vegetable soup, peas, lentils, cheep bacon, eggs, fruit and vegetables. They added pepper, garlic, and onions to their food. Peasants would drink ale which is a sugary starchy drink, and provided nourishment.

6: King and Nobles Entertainment | The Jester (or fool)-King and Noble's entertainment. .wears a cap with bells, carries a bladder on a stick. . Sings songs for amusement. . Told crude jokes and said things that were not suposed to by others.

7: Festivals | Festivals are usually on holiday's but some can be year round. There are also all year festivals like circuses.

8: Jousting | Jousting- a fight between mounted knights wearing armor and using lances. | In middle ages they would joust because, it was a type of entertainment.

9: Traveling Entertainment | Musicians sang and danced to fiddles, bag pipes, nackers (small drum), shawns (loud like oboes), and the pipe-and-tabor. It was like a one man band. Used left hand for the pipe and used right hand with flat drum. | Similar to a circus. | Also included jugglers, acrobats, animal trainers, and the jester.

10: Other Festival Activities | Bofires- A symbol of wealth and status. Couples would leap through the fire to seal their vows on may day on a wedding. On Christmas performers would put on masks and costumes on monsters, and sing, dance, and mock famous battles. They would also perform plays based on stories from saints lives such as King George killing the dragon or ancient legends like the Green Man. Also on May Day people decorated their houses with green garlands

11: All year round Entertainment | When there were no festivals, or traveling entertainers people still had to have some form of entertainment that wouldn't be as fun be could still pass time. Many people rich or poor would either play games such as chess or cards. Others, mainly in the higher classes would watch and bet on wrestling matches.

12: About the Author | Danielle | Danielle s 12 yrs old and likes to play sports and hang out with friends. Attends Eyer Middle school and is in 7th grade. Goes to the beach every summer with family or friends. Has a dog and two brothers. | Essence Essence is 13 yrs old and plays basketball, runs track ,soccer,swim and dance.Attends Eyer Middle school.And is in 7th grade.
