FC: Our Summer Vacation to Kauai! 2011
We flew first to Seattle and then to Kauai on Alaska Airlines. We stayed at the Sheraton Kauai Resort & were upgraded to an ocean front room.
The pool area had been closed since January for construction. So there was lots of acttiviy near our room--the reason for our upgrade.
We knew we couldn't beat the view, so I ordered pizza & a salad from room service for dinner the first night. We ate right here on our patio.
This beautiful orchid garden is nextdoor to our resort at the Kiahuna Plantation where we stayed 27 years ago with Lynn & John Weber.
Kirk enjoyed talking to the gardener, Ben, about how to grow orchids.
The soil in Kauai is SO red. We went by this old sugarcane factory with a cemetery in the foreground, & thought they had interesting similarities.
We had never been to the Waimea Canyon before, so we enjoyed seeing it for the first time.
It's called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It was cloudy, so not too much contrast with the sky, but still lovely."
After visiting the Canyon, we picnicked in a nice park up on the mountain. As we came down the mountain on a different road, we could see the ocean spread out before us.
We enjoyed our self-guided tour of the Kauai Coffee PLantation. The beans are called cherries & are harvested with a large picker that is also used with blueberry plants. We bought 2 iced coffees as it was very hot & humid that day.
We enjoyed seeing Spouting Horn again. The waves crash under the rocks & the water is forced up through the hole. It makes a howling sound as well.
It is amazing to see the homes right up next to the ocean with waves crashing just a few feet from their windows. We thought this sign was funny, so we took a picture of it.
The gardens at the Sheraton are lovely as well. This is where we ate both breakfasts & one dinner.
To the left you see a man up in the palm tree. It was interesting to watch him trim the trees to get ready for the grand opening of the pool a few hours later.
Here we are again at Pali Ke Kua ##118 in Princeville. We really enjoy this one bedroom condo with a 270 degree view of the ocean.
This was the view from Scotty's BBQ in Kapa'a. Lynn & Phil were honored recently by the State of Hawaii for all of their work & love taking in over 40 foster children over the years.
We had a delightful time sharing breakfast with Lynn & Phil Luttrell. They are praying for a new fulltime job for Lynn either in Kauai or in So. Carolina.
We drove up the road to Opeakaa Falls and stopped at the Wailea River overlook. The scenery here is so beautiful. We were interested in taking the tour of the old Coco Palms grounds, but it was $20 a person, so we decided not to.
We stopped along the way up the coast near the Kilauea lighthouse area.
We split a vanilla & coconut Hawaiin Shave Ice--yum. Then we stopped at the club house for the local golf course. The walls are all glass--just beautiful.
The view from our condo in the late afternoon.
We had a front row seat for some beautiful sunsets.
The Hawaiian geese came to visit us each morning. After Kirk fed the pair some bread scraps, then 7 more came for a snack.
Here is the BBQ area on the pathway to the private beach. Such a beautiful view.
We walked down the steep path at the condo to the private beach below. We spent the afternoon there enjoying the scenery, waves & beautiful fish. Kirk snorkeled & I got eaten by bugs. :(
We had a delicious dinner at the Hanalei Dolphin. We both had the teriyaki ahi (tuna). Afterwards we got an ice cream cone at Lappert's Ice Cream Shop in Princeville.
We kayaked down the Hanalei River & out around the pier. We enjoyed the quiet beach and beautiful clouds & gentle waves. We ate a picnic lunch & then paddled back up the river. We even found a hideaway amongst the trees overhanging the water.
The Hanalei River has a type of hibiscus tree overhanging the banks where we found a hideaway on the way upstream. This is the fountain at the entrance to Princeville.
Beautiful Hanalei, with the patchwork taro fields
We went to a Slack Key Guitar concert in the Community Center in Hanalei, then went & got burgers at Bubba Burgers. Elizabeth Luttrell works nextdoor at the shave ice stand, so we stopped to say hello to her.
We zoomedhome from Hanalei to see this multi-faceted sunset.
Notice the outline of the Fallen Chief in the mountain.
On this beautifully clear morning, we enjoyed our breakfast outside. We also had fun using the zoom lens on my new Canon SX 30.
We stopped at the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park for a tour, but there were no tours that day. These pretty flowers are near their gift shop.
Hopefully, we'll be able to take the tour next time we visit Kauai.
We ate our last picnic lunch at Anini Beach & could see the Kilauea lighthouse across the bay.
