1: Introduction Hernando Cortes was a Spanish Conquistador. He was born in Medellin, Spain, in 1485. He traveled the world in expeditions with other explorers. He is known for conquering the Aztecs in Mexico. Hernando Cortes discovered one of the most delicious treats known to man.

2: Family Hernando Cortes was the child of Martin Cortes de Monroy and Catalina Pizarro Altamirano. He married Catalina Xuarez Marcaida(died 1522) 2nd wife: Juana Ramirez de Arellano de Zuniga.(Had four children) last wife: Bernaldina de Porras Sons: Martin Cortes, Luis Cortes Daughters: Catalina Pizarro, Leonor Maria, Juana.

3: Childhood Hernando Cortes was born in Medellin,Spain, in 1485. He was a weak and sick child, (Many children at that time were sick),he was on the edge of dying,(But survived). At the age of 14 he went to the university of Salamanca to learn about law. At the age of 16, he went back home. No one is exactly sure why he left, but some say he didn't like it or he didn't have enough money. His parents were mad about his decision. This was not the first time he went against their will, in fact he was called the source of trouble for him and his parents, because of this he decided to seek his fortune.

4: The Adventure Begins

5: Expeditions | In 1502, Hernando Cortes hears about the new world and gets on an expedition headed for the west Indies led by Nicolas de Ovando and Diego Velázquez. In 1511, Diego Columbus, the new governor of Hispaniola, resolved to conquer the island of Cuba and selected Diego Velázquez as commander of the expedition. The expedition to Cuba consisted of four vessels with 300 men. Hernando Cortes was chosen to accompany Velázquez on the expedition. Velázquez wants to explore more land. Velázquez makes Cortes in command. Cortes asked to explore Mexico. Hernando Cortes went to Mexico even after Velázquez told him not to go.

6: Mexico | In 1519, Hernando Cortes conquered Mexico. The conquering of Mexico was one of the greatest expeditions of all time. The expedition started when Diego de Velázquez gave Hernando Cortes permission to form a small army to explore Mexico in 1518. Diego de Velázquez changed his mind and told him not to go to Mexico. Hernando went to Mexico anyway. On March 1519, Cortes arrived in the coast of Mexico. Cortes arrived with 600 to 700 Spaniards 18 horse men some cannons in ten ships. Hernando Cortes did not want to attack the Aztecs, instead he wanted to study them, Diego Velázquez attacked them instead, and they thought Cortes told them to attack them, so they attacked Cortes and he defeated them. Cortes conquered the Aztecs an empire of 5 million people

7: Aztecs | The Aztecs had many gods and goddesses.Their most important god was Huitzilopitchli the sun god. Tenochtitlan had no farming surface so they made their own farmland, they made mats made of reed, the mats would allow the plants roots to grow to the bottom of the lake so they would have an endless supply of water. They thought Hernando Cortes was a white god coming from the east,so they treated him well. The Aztecs were also amazed at the cannons. Hernando Cortes ended the ancestors but they still live on.

8: Chocolate | Did you know? The Aztecs had cocoa beans. The Aztecs used cocoa beans to make chocolate. The Aztecs gave Hernando Cortes cocoa beans. Hernando Cortes showed the king and queen of Spain how important cocoa beans were and how they could use them.

9: Spain | At the time of Hernando Cortes's expedition in Mexico, the king of Spain (Charles V) was worried that Cortes was becoming too powerful. Cortes was asked to return to Spain to lead smaller expeditions in Europe. The king and Cortes had a bad relationship. The king did not let Cortes participate in large expeditions in Mexico. Cortes retired to an estate near Seville, Spain.Cortes died on December 1547
