FC: James Knox Polk

February 13,1845 Dear Diary Today was the most amazing day of my life. It was my first day as the U.S. President. I inaugurated as the 11th president of the United States. I am also very nervous because I want to fulfill all five of my promises that I made. I want to lower the tariff, set up a sub-treasury, annex Texas into the Union, get California into the union, and to settle the Oregon dispute.

December 29, 1845 Dear Diary, Today I had a meeting with the committee of enrollment of the two Houses of Congress. They presented to me a resolution to the admission of Texas into the United States. I signed and approved it. I had copies of it delivered to the President of Texas and to the Captain of Texas. I already fulfilled one of my promises. Now, I want to see if I can buy California.....

1846 Dear Diary, I have lowered the tariff!!! That means I have accomplished two of my 5 promises. It was tough. I had to go against strong opposition of manufacturers, but I handled it very well. This is the first real approach to free trade in this country. I have also established the national treasury. It was also tough, but I managed it. I have now set up the government's financial system. This all means that in all I have already accomplished three of my five promises. That is really great!

May 11, 1846 Dear Diary, I wanted to buy California and New Mexico from Mexico. My plan failed, so I went to Congress to declare war on Mexico because they were willing to fight. This started the Mexican War. I hope it doesn't end too bad!

June 15, 1846 Dear Diary, I got my secretary of state to propose a boundary at the 49th parallel of the Oregon Territory. The British minister refused, but when i said, "The only way to treat John Bull is to look him straight in the eye." he decided to accept my offer. I am very happy! I now settled the Oregon dispute and got that land for the United States. This means that the fourth promise is accomplished.

February 2, 1848 Dear Diary, Today was a big relief for the nation! Mexico got defeated, so they signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The U.S.A. now has the area from California to Texas and the Oregon Territory. This also means that I have fulfilled my fifth promise. That is really good!

April 24, 1849 Dear Diary, I am done with my presidency! I have fulfilled all of my promises. I fulfilled my personal one because I accomplished all of my promises in one term. Today Sarah and I took up residency in the retirement home of Polk's Place. I am done now, and I think that I ended my presidency very well!
