James Madison A True President By Mike Kemp

Madison was elected as president in 1808 after a long career as a politician and a philosopher. He helped to draft the US Constitution. Madison submitted his ideas in the forging of the Federalist Papers. Although he accepted input from others, James Madison is known as the author of the Bill of Rights as well. During his presidency he created the Second Bank of the United States and led America to victory in the War of 1812.

During his term as president the city of Washington DC was lit ablaze. The end of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe led to a massive increase in British military power. This build up of British troops resulted in the burning of Washington DC. The fall of Washington DC boosted American morale allowing them to turn it around and win the War of 1812.

Madison had a significant influence on the meetings that led up to the constitutional convention. "Among the 55 delegates who met in Philadelphia in 1787 to correct the flaws in the Articles of Confederation, Madison was recognized as the best-prepared scholar in political history." (ABC CLIO).

Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison worked together, after the constitution was completed, to draft the Federalist Papers. Which were essays that outlined the goals and philosophies of the new national government

He was the youngest person elected to the Second Continental Congress. During his almost four years of membership in the Continental Congress, he was known as a firm believer in a strong central government. He was known for being shy, but also as a highly respected debater.

James Madison was the fourth president of the US and the first president to be elected that had served in the US Congress. He is known as "The Father of the Constitution" for his aid in the drafting process. His contributions to the Constitution are still in affect today. It is the basis of our government and has been in place ever since he wrote it.
