S: Atsugi Keishin Hospital

1: Atsugi Keishin Hospital

3: Derelict and desolate, the abandoned Atsugi Keishin Hospital stands proud in rural Kanagawa. But, once a pre-eminent site of Japanese radiological technology, today it is a gutted shell, left to deteriorate. The hospital closed in 1997 after becoming bankrupt. Since, it has become widely known as being ‘haunted,’ and as such has gained infamy on Japanese TV and the internet. Describing it as ‘creepy,’ local residents have long campaigned for the hospital’s demolition. So, while they can, some venture there: teenagers testing their courage, film crews and photographers. From within these walls, have come stories of unexplained accidents and spirits appearing in pictures. The place is covered in debris. But it is not all destruction here. Amongst the shattered glass of the blown-out windows, the busted walls and the dead elevators, are scenes of colour and art. Street artists come here now, using the hospital as their canvas; to create. And the vibrancy of the graffiti, which is ever-changing, is stunning. Around dark corners, faces, almost lifelike, may catch the unprepared visitor unawares. There may not be much left of this building’s previous identity, but it certainly still has life. From the greenery slowly crawling inside, to the spray paint on every surface, this hospital is still visited. And for that, it is a remarkable place. May 2010
