S: Honeymoon - Kennebunkport, ME June 2011
FC: Kennebunkport, ME June 2011 | Honeymoon
1: June 26, we arrived at the airport, ready to get our honeymoon underway. But our first delay came while we were still in the airport - 30 minutes. That passed in no time and we boarded our plane. They closed the doors and began the flight safety information, but the pilot came over the speaker and announced that we had an hour delay ahead of us. The door is opened and the very full plane sits and waits out the hour. The hour passes and they close the doors again. And again the captain comes on and announces another hour delay. No one is happy about the delay, and now we're worried about missing our connecting flight. We were given a number to call to check on our connecting flights, which we did and were told that our connecting flight also has a delay so everything should be fine. But finally the hour passes, they close the doors and pull away. Everyone is happy because now at least we are getting somewhere. But before we get underway, the captain once again comes on and tells us there is yet another 30 minute delay. The thirty minutes pass and we finally take off. It was a smooth and uneventful flight to Atlanta. Once we landed, we went to check for our connecting flight, but we couldn't find it. We finally track down a machine that will tell us if we missed our flight or not and sure enough we did. Our connecting flight actually took off early, so there was never a chance we were going to make it. We are now stuck in Atlanta with a new flight the following night with no luggage. We attempted to track down an early flight but as it turns out we weren't the only ones that were having flight problems. On top of that, there were no more hotel rooms near the airport. We get on the phone and find a sooner flight, which would take us back to the Midwest with two connections before we would get to Portland. It was the best we could do. We decide to just get some food and get our tickets and find a place to snooze in the airport near our terminal. But when we went to get our tickets from the machine, there was none to get. Upset, we get into a very long line at 1:00 am to talk to a real live person behind a desk. We wait for two hours before we got to the desk and talked to a nice man who told us he would reissue our tickets. He walks away then comes back a few minutes with a direct flight at 9:25 am. I didn't believe him - seeing as it was 3 am - and questioned him to make sure it was the right Portland we were flying to. Indeed it was. He said there was a last minute opening. We were extremely excited. We asked for a blanket, but instead he gave us a free room at a local hotel. It was only three hours of sleep but it was better than nothing We drug ourselves out of bed wanting more sleep but we weren't going to miss that flight for anything. We boarded the flight without delay and again without delay we took off. Soon enough we landed in Portland, rented our car, and took off for our hour drive to Kennebunkport. It didn't exactly go as planned. We arrived later than we wanted. But we arrived at least. It may not have been what we wanted, but it turned out to be one heck of a story. And definitely an interesting way to start out a honeymoon.
