FC: A Bug's Life Year 1

Levi Benjamin Tyler Gordon 8 Pounds 11 Ounces | February 13, 2011 2:35 PM St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis

Proud Family | Dear Bug . . . We waited for you for so long. We tried and tried for a baby, and finally after seven tries, we got you. Then we had the long wait for you to come, and when you finally did, we were so proud and happy. We loved you from the time you were no more than a little speck in Mommy's belly, and we'll love you forever.

We knew you were special, we could tell. You were a very alert baby and not much of a sleeper. You could hold your head up and at five days rolled over for the first time. One of our favorite stories from the hospital involved your Momma changing you. She'd laid you on the bed and just taken off your diaper. Your Uncle Steve was visiting and dared you to pee on her. Ironically you did pee, straight up in the air and directly in your mouth. Momma felt so bad and cuddled with you afterwards. | We weren't expecting you on that Sunday. We thought you wouldn't come until the next week, but you inherited your Mommy's stubbornness. Then things looked bleak when you were born blue and not breathing. For a little while we weren't sure you were going to stay with us. But you were a fighter, and as soon as you were able, you tore your oxygen mask off and breathed on your own. You only spent 2 days in the special nursery.

Coming Home | Dear Bug, Today, after a very long wait, we came home. Your bubby was there waiting for us and couldn't wait for you to get inside. Once we were all in the house, we just sat and watched you sleep in your car seat. When you finally woke up, we all rushed for you. Welcome home, little bug. | Welcome Home, Levi! | The first things you did when you came home were swing in your swing and go for a walk with your momma.

. . . And Leaving Again | Dear Bug . . . You had only been home a few days when we went to see Dr. Stucki for your checkup. She was concerned that you weren't gaining weight, so she sent you back to the hospital. They were very concerned and not certain why you weren't gaining weight and were losing weight instead. Not only were you not gaining weight, but you weren't sleeping either. You slept maybe 6 hours a day. The rest of the time you were up and alert, ready to see what was going on. | You charmed everyone at St. John's hospital. So much that I think they adopted you. For this first visit they decided to add calories to your diet and gave us stuff to thicken your milk and formula to add more calories. | We were very scared because you threw up the majority of what you ate, and you would have spells where you'd scream inconsolably for hours. You seemed to be in pain, but nothing we did helped. The doctors sent us home with a new diet plan and some medicine for acid reflux. They said things were under control, but your Momma and I weren't so sure.

Dear Bug, You came home from the hospital after about a week. Soon after, your umbilical cord fell off and we could finally give you a bath. At first you weren't sure, and then you fussed a little, but by the end, you were smiling. Bathtime quickly became one of your favorite times. When you were little you took your bath in the sink and then the big tub. | First Bath

Dear Bug, Even after you came home from the hospital with the new diet plan, you still weren't gaining weight, you were still throwing up, and still cried all the time. And sleep . . . forget that. Sleep was hit or miss. There were a few moments though when you did sleep, usually when we were holding you.

Back in the Hospital . . . Again

Yes Bug, We lived at the hospital. Forever it seemed like. No one could quite figure out what was wrong, and no one seemed to believe us when we said something was wrong. We became addicted to slushies, brownies and chicken strips. All we wanted was for you to be healthy and happy.

 Bug's Life at Home

Dear Bug, Even though the first few months of your life were spent in and out of hospitals, doctor's offices, and labs, we made the most of our time together. You had so much fun hanging out with the dogs, singing and watching Baby Einstein, taking a bath (you loved water), and playing on the floor. It didn't matter how bad you felt, you made us smile and made all the long, sleepless nights worth every minute. We took you to church so you could meet all the people who had prayed so hard for you. You hung out with Sophia during the day and sometimes, you slept all snuggled up in a swaddle just like a little bug. That's why we started calling you bug. You had to wear a heart monitor at night which had two antenna, and wrapped up in your blanket, the similarity was just uncanny. And the name stuck.

Yes Levi, You do have a big brother . . .

Yes, Levi, You do have a big brother . . . | And his name is Michael.
