S: Lucky Star Inaugural Season 2011

FC: Lucky Star | Inaugural Season 2011

Lucky Star is Born! On Sunday, April 10th 2011 Lucky Star was born at Sturgeon Point Marina in Wasaga Beach. A healthy boat, at 1454 pounds and measuring 15 feet long and 7 feet wide.

On Sunday, April 17th Lucky Star was dropped in the water for the very first time!

Our First Cruise On Lucky Star Shane was our first guest. Good thing he was there! We got stuck in the sand... twice. We should have seen the sand dunes. Without hesitation, Shane took off his shoes, rolled up his pants and jumped in the water to push us to freedom. It was a freezing cold 2 degrees that day. It was our first lesson of many to come!

Collingwood The following Sunday we brought up Yolanda. It was freezing cold, but we made our way to Collingwood. It was so early in the season that no public docks were in. Still learning to park, we eventually tied up to the only stable dock we could find, and went to Starbucks to warm up!

An Evening With Jessica We came up one Tuesday evening with JP and Jessica. It was our warmest trip yet, and the water was beautiful, it was like glass.

Lucky Star Comes To Port Credit In May, we brought Lucky Star down to Lake Ontario, where it would spend the next few months at Port Credit Harbour Marina in Mississauga.

Finding our slip in the dark was super difficult! Good thing for flashlights!

First Trip on Lake Ontario Our first time out on the lake, we brought Sandra and Steve. We were amazed how calm the water was. Toronto looked great from the lake and we quickly learned our landmarks to find our way around the Toronto coast line.

The Fog It started as a clear, sunny afternoon. We invited Brad and Angela out for a spin. We were on our way back when we were overcome by a thick fog. We could not see our hands in front of our faces. Watching our compass and depth monitor we carefully found our way back to Port Credit. I think we were all happy to be back on dry land that day!

 Yay! We made it!

A Bumpy Ride With Sasha Went out in the evening and sailed around the Toronto Islands. Hit some rough water on the way back, but managed to avoid getting too soaked. Back at the marina, a swan tried to bite Nicole's bum as she was tying the ropes!

Our First Hot Day And we almost didn't get to go out! The start switch cable came loose during a super bumpy ride with Bonni a few days before. We were about to pull the boat out for service when David fixed the switch!

Yolanda and Arek We took Yolanda and Arek out one warm evening in June. We went up the humber river and through Ontario Place, followed by a yummy dinner at Snug Harbour back in Port Credit.

Crazy Times With Bonni and Andreja Over the course of the summer, we shared many crazy rides with Bonni and Andreja. Bonni was a bit of a cowboy, going out in the craziest weather and jumping the largest waves. Many times we picked them up at "The Spot" at Park Lawn and Lakeshore and braced ourselves for a wet, bumpy ride.

Canada Day Long Weekend We spent our Canada Day with Katie's parents and their boat, Let's Drift. They dropped anchor and we tethered to them at The Beaches, and spent the afternoon hanging out. On the way back, the boys had some fun in the wake of Let's Drift, they caught some crazy air! We had dinner at the Boulevard Club and cruised back to Port Credit in the dark for the first time ever. Watching the fireworks from the water was really exciting!

Boom! Boom! Boom! David and Bonni got a few bruises this day. The fiberglass part that covers the engine also got jammed under its supporting notches. It took about an hour and some nearly-lost fingers to finally get it out!

More Let's Drift Get-Togethers We ended up spending several more days with the Wilsons. The boys loved jumping the wake, and the girls relaxed on the sun pad.

Getting Picked Up From Work On the occasional Thursday, David would pick up Nicole at Ontario Place after work. Debbie came with him one time, and Herbie and Katrina met us at Snug Harbour for dinner. Beats the TTC!

Lake Mazinaw | Day 1 Paul Psaila invited us for the weekend to a cottage he was staying at with his sons on Lake Mazinaw, 3 hours north-east of Toronto. It was a beautiful setting, the water was so clear Lucky Star came out cleaner than when we put it in!

Who's Watching The Rope? We had spent the day tubing and skiing, and with the day coming to an end it was Kalen's turn to hit the tube. Everything was set, he was ready to go. We turned Lucky Star on and heard a loud sound coming from the engine. The rope from the tube had gotten sucked in, we had been careless and not kept it away. Kalen and Paul spent 2 hours trying to pull it out inch by inch when it finally got dark. Worried and disappointed, we decided to pull the boat out in the morning and call it a weekend.

Day 2 Despite the previous day's events, we got up the next day and felt optimistic. It was a beautiful morning, water so calm it looked like a sheet of glass.

Paul got up at 7, put on his wet suit and dove under the boat. We found him with his scuba gear on and a set of tools on the dock. 45 minutes later, he came up triumphant! He had successfully removed all the mangled rope from Lucky Star's jet engine. He was a true hero! We went to the store and bought a new rope and the fun continued on.

Back To Port Credit... | We brought Lucky Star to Debbie and Herbie's for a good clean before bringing it back to Port Credit.

...Then Back To Wasaga! In September, the water on Lake Ontario became too rough for Lucky Star. We were going to bring it back to Wasaga for winter storage anyway, so we decided to take it up there to spend the last few weeks of the season on calmer waters.

Kristina Comes To Wasaga On September 18th, the day after she returned from 6 months in Germany, Kristina came up to Wasaga for a ride on Lucky Star. Fall was in the air and the bay was a bit choppy, though nothing we couldn't handle. We got a bit wet but dried quickly in the beaming sun.

Herbie Finally Goes For A Ride! David was in Wasaga one of the last few times this year, and Herbie and Debbie happened to be in the area also. After an entire season, Herbie finally agreed to come for a short ride along the river! On Sunday, October 2nd 2011 we asked Eddie at the Marina to pull Lucky Star out for the winter and put it away. Looking back on our first season as boaters, we created so many good memories and learned so much. We have come along way from that cold April day when we got stuck in the sand. Looking forward to May 2012, when Lucky Star will come out of hibernation and we can create a whole new set of wonderful memories!
