Mary rocked the baby Jesus in her arms. Then she laid him gently on the hay.
Oxen, chicken, donkey and the dog and cat. All seemed to know that Christ was born today.
"Moo moo, cluck cluck, he-haw, yap yap woof, meow." They joined together in a symphony. | Donkey pranced so proudly as he told the rest. "Mary rode to Bethlehem on me."
The animals together looked in great surprise. They understood the "he-haw" Donkey said.
No longer just a donkey with annoying noise. They listened as they gathered 'round the bed.
"He-haw," he told them proudly, "oh the road was long. And there was no room at any inn. A kind man gave us shelter in the stable here. I thank you all for letting us come in."
"He is the new born Savior," cried the lamb, "baa baa. I heard if from my cousins on the hill.
The angels sang to them in hallelujahs grand. And sent the shepherds here to bring good will."
"To Mary I gave straw whereon the babe was born. My manger for a place where he could sleep. And shared with him my stable." said the cow, "Moo, moo." All creatures understood, even the sheep.
"I warmed the baby's bed," boasted the goose, "honk honk."
"I gave the family eggs." clucked chicken red.
"I know what I'll contribute to the babe." quacked quacked the duck, "My downy feathers for a softer bed."
Doves cooed a lullaby that put the babe to sleep,
While Cat purred, near the baby's cheek.
"I'll be his companion 'til I'm old." woof woofed the dog.
And Mouse piped in with just a tiny "squeak."
"Moo moo, cluck cluck, he-haw, yap yap woof, meow. Baa baa, honk honk, quack quack, coo coo, squeak." | The animals that night all spoke the same language. For just one glorious night they all could speak.
