FC: The Alchemist | Supernatural | a monomyth by Megan Yawn | by Paulo Coelho

 Stage 1: Departure

The Call to Adventure | Santiago, a shepherd boy, had a reoccurring dream where a child told him about a hidden treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. Although he had the same dream twice, "just as she was about to show [him] the exact location, [he] woke up. Both times" (Coelho 140.

Refusal of the Call | While he was thinking about how he would make it to Africa to follow his dream, "the idea frightened him" (Coelho 26). He then decided to stay and continue being a shepherd, since he had worked his whole life learning all he could about shepherding and taking care of his sheep.

Supernatural Aid | After he talked to the Gypsy, he met an old man who told him about Personal Legends. After they discussed Santiago's dream and the treasure, he found out that the old man was actually king. Before they parted, the king gave the boy two stones, saying, "They are called Urim and Thummim" (Coelho 30). These stones were to be used to help the boy read omens along his journey.

Crossing the First Threshold | When the old king and the boy went their separate ways, Santiago traveled to Africa. When he arrived, he thought about "how strange Africa is" (Coelho 33). He had finally been able to get there, and he was starting his journey to look for the hidden treasure.

The Belly of the Whale | After arriving in Africa, and having his money stolen by a thief, Santiago found himself alone in a marketplace. He fell asleep, and when he woke up, he found that the streets were filled with people. He wondered where his sheep were, and then remembered that "he was in a new world" (Coelho 42). He no longer had his sheep with him, and he was alone for the first time.

Stage 2: Initiation | Goddess Supernatural

The Road of Trials | During his time in Africa, Santiago encountered many obstacles. He was alone, and his money was stolen by a thief. Along his journey, he met others who helped him on his quest, such as the crystal merchant, Fatima, the Englishman, and the alchemist. He worked for and stayed with crystal merchant, but"he could see that that it wasn't exactly the kind of job that would make him happy" (Coelho 51). He had to earn money so he could eventually buy his sheep back.

Meeting with a Goddess | Santiago met a young desert woman named Fatima, and he new it was love at first sight. She also felt this way, and he told her that he loved her and wanted her to be his wife. She knew about the treasure, and told him "if you have to go before then, go on in pursuit of your dream" (Coelho 97). She was willing to wait for him, because she knew he'd come back to her one day.

Temptation Away from the True Path | As he continued on his journey, Santiago met and alchemist who offered to take him across the desert. He responded by saying he wanted to stay at the oasis. Since he had found Fatima, "as far as [he] was concerned, she's worth more than treasure" (Coelho 118). The alchemist explained that he should find his treasure, because he will spend the rest of his life regretting it if he doesn't.

Atonement with the Father | When Santiago turned himself into the wind, he was finally able to understand alchemy, and everything the alchemist had learned through his own journey. This knowledge brought them closer together, before they parted and went their separate ways. The alchemist was proud, and "he had found his perfect disciple" (Coelho 153).

Apotheosis | Santiago and the alchemist were soon confronted by tribesmen, who were going to kill them. To spare their lives, the alchemist threatened them with alchemy, and he promised that Santiago could turn himself into the wind. Three days later, the boy had to get over his fear, and find it in himself to turn into the wind. After he accomplished this, the chief and tribesmen were amazed and terrified. He had found that "he, a boy, could perform miracles" (Coelho 152).

 Stage 3: Return

Refusal of the Return | Santiago was having doubts about continuing and finding his treasure. He had learned everything he wanted to know from the alchemist, and that was all he needed. He contemplated going back to the oasis to be with Fatima, but then he remembered why he started this journey. Since "he was at the point of finding his treasure" (Coelho 160), he decided that "no project is completed until the objective has been achieved" (Coelho 160).

Master of Two Worlds | While he was in the desert, men approached him and took his gold, made him dig for more, and beat him. Before they left, one of the men told him that he had had a dream about treasure too, and he shouldn't be so stupid as to look for it. While telling Santiago this, he revealed to him the location of the hidden treasure. Although he was hurt, Santiago was happy "because now he knew where his treasure was" (Coelho 163).
