1: Group lunch in Flores (David and Sheri; 2 couples from Toronto, Danielle (Terry taking photo), Joe and his mom, Adrienne; Nora and Elaine; Jay and Brenda; plus Sergio and our guide, Carlos)
2: Early morning flight to Santa Elena (Flores) and short boat ride to Topoxte. First time we heard howler monkeys.
3: Yaxha Extensive site with ball court and plaza of three pyramids as well as other central plazas.
6: Boat ride to Petencito zoo from Flores. Water levels alarmingly high in town.
7: Time after boat ride for walk around Flores.
8: San Felipe Castle at entrance of Rio Dulce Built in 1652 to keep pirates out
9: Two-hour journey down Rio Dulce to Livingston and across to Puerto Barrios with riverside lunch stop
10: Quirigua Primarily only stelae remain. Largest is 8 meters above ground with another 3 meters underground. Elaborate headdresses, beards on some of the figures, and other detailed carvings.
12: Copan UNESCO site Hieroglyphic staircase highlight
14: Copan Museum of Sculpture
16: Chichicastenango market and Church of Santo Tomas with flower offerings on staircase.
17: Chichicastenango cemetery Christian tombs and Mayan graves
18: Panajachel on Lake Atitlan. Boat trip to Santiago Atitlan, one of the twelve towns surrounding lake (once again high water levels). Lake is a caldera (more than 320 meters deep) and surrounded by three volcanoes.
21: Casa Santa Domingo restored 17th century convent and wonderful restaurant
