FC: A book of memories for Mary Sue (Lester) Doell

San Marcos High School graduation 1959

When Sue, Linda & I were growing up we were like a pack of dogs. Linda & I always wanted to be the head dog so Sue had to always be the peace keeper. But one thing we agreed on was to swipe a cigarette and sneak to the back of the pasture and share a smoke. We were so cool, we thought ... - Kathryn (Turner) Schulle

-L | I could always talk Sue into doing my algebra homework for me! Back in the day, Sue's birthday fell on the opening day of deer season and that was definitely problematic in our family! -Linda (Lester) Buckner

After Lyndi came along, Aunt Sue always bought the cool snacks and new items on the market. Pringles, Capri Sun...the things my mom wouldn't buy! She would also buy me clothing and shoes from the PX to match or coordinate with Lyndi. It always made me feel special that she got me the those things. Aunt Sue has always been the laid back aunt. Where Aunt Patsy would whip your butt for something, Aunt Sue would just take a deep breath and tell you to stop doing whatever foolish thing you were doing...and usually chuckle about it immediately afterward. I always thought she just took whatever insulting crap Uncle David threw at her good naturedly, and she did. But as I grew older and watched their interaction, I realized that she had limit, and when she reached that limit, a look would be shot at Uncle David and he would be silenced! It was a subtle exchange, classy and gracious, but very effective! - Jennifer (Buckner) Bolton

I can remember mom always letting me be involved in different activities. We started off with Brownies and Girl Scouts then advanced to dance class. She faithfully drove me to tap, jazz, ballet, baton twirling, and gymnastics as well as helping to sew costumes for our recitals!! Later, she watched me perform at school band concerts and cheerleading at football & basketball games. She was always a great supporter and was there to cheer ME on!!! - Lyndi (Doell) Moon

Sue became my best friend when we met in Germany in 1979. The Doell's had already gotten settled before we got there and became their neighbors. Our girls were starting kindergarten a week after our family arrived, and Jennifer needed the usual school supplies. Well – Sue had already gotten everything on the list for both Lyndi and Jennifer and had even made Jennifer the ‘painter's apron’ that all kindergartener's need.! What a special person that is to do all that!! And, what a beautiful first impression she made! When we all came back to TX, Sue and I would have lunch out at our favorite Mexican place – Casa Ole – and even splurge on one of their ice cream sundaes occasionally! When not out shopping and sharing sewing information, family stories, etc, there were lengthy phone conversations. I think we both knew everything there was to know about our families – I felt I got to know her parents, Patsy, Dot, & Linda, as well as Sue got to know my parents & brothers ... And, of course there were the family group evenings of dinner; adults playing cards or domino's and the kids just playing whatever!-- So much fun. Both Sue and David are the most caring and generous people we know – always willing to offer a helping hand & listening ear when needed. - Leone Dipboye

My favorite memory of Aunt Sue is when she used to dye Easter eggs with us at grandma’s house. The old fashioned way... with little bottles of food coloring and vinegar in coffee cups. She was patient, showed us how to mix colors and of course her eggs were the prettiest! - Jesslyn (Cargile) Lefler

It was such a wonderful gift to have mom take part in my wedding shower as well as help with the details of my wedding day. - Lyndi (Doell) Moon

One of my favorite memories of Sue is how much she loves little ones. I can remember her always wanting to hold John Mark when he was little at all family functions. He was quite a handful and I never turned her down!! I am glad I didn’t ... - Tiffany Cargile

Grandma always would sit in the floor and play games with me. She even played trucks with me in the dirt. She especially liked to bring me surprises when her and Grandpa came to visit. - Mason Moon | Sue is the best mother-in-law a guy could ever ask for! - Scott Moon

Sue always had a great sense of humor when I would call and play tricks on Daddy. - Troy Doell
