FC: Museum Visit Photo Essay The Morris Museum 6 Normandy Heights Road Morristown, NJ 07960
Many of my experiences have been at the Morris Museum. I have had an ongoing relationship with them for years and have had the opportunity to support this small local museum which has a SMALL paid staff and A LOT of willing volunteers who work endless hours to make it a wonderful experience for all who visit.
When you arrive at the museum you are greeted by the man who guards the museum and another sculpture that we have come to know as "friends"
The first thing you see when you enter the main hall is the gift shop - this is usually manned by volunteers as well as the ticket desk - this too is staffed by volunteers when they are available
Volunteers are a vital part of the museum's day to day operations. They serve in various jobs ranging from helping with exhibitions, educational programs and visitor services.
As we all know -museums use exhibitions to display art for the public and promote an environment for learning. They rely on a team of employees to perform installation tasks and maintenance for exhibits. What do you do when you don't have the money to pay employees or companies to help with these necessary operations – you look for volunteers.
Here I am helping out with a few good people to install movable walls and layout an exhibition for the tapestry show
The museum has a variety of exhibits throughout the year - due to the lack of funding they look to local companies to help with ideas for new shows - currently I helped execute a show entitled Modern Tapestries and Floor Coverings Conceived by Picasso, Calder & their Contemporaries Exhibited works on loan from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Montclair State University along with works from the permanent collection of the Morris Museum.
Not only did Novartis lend the works for display - I helped with the install and the signage for the show!
Exhibition for Artist of the Future
The museum has on a monthly basis exhibits to showcase local students
To summarize my ongoing relationship with the Morris Museum – the small staff of about 6 people are GREAT and are so passionate about what they do. I can honestly say they are not in it for the money - but who in the museum industry is? They are a jack of all trades – there is no one on staff that has one set job. Even though their website lists them with specific titles – they are like me – someone who does it all and if you can't do it yourself – you find a volunteer who knows how to make it happen. If you ever have an opportunity to visit the Morris Museum in New Jersey I highly recommend it – I probably will be having an exhibition that day.
