S: from slavery to freedom

I am going to tell you all about my trip from slavery to freedom.

I grew up as a slave in North Carolina. It was terrible, I had to work on big plantations and I had to plant crops. When I grew up, I found out I was a slave and I felt really bad. I wished they would let us go.

I found out that I would never be free so I decided to escape, I was told to follow the north star. Before I left, I waved goodbye to my people and I was on my way.

Escaping was hard, after the master found out I escaped he offered a 100,000 dollar reward for finding me. There were a lot of people looking for me, so I had to be smart.

During my journey to freedom, there were some people who didn't agree with slavery. Those people helped me on my journey to freedom.

It was called the Underground Railroad. It wasn't a train or underground. It was a secret, If the wrong person found out the people that helped me would lose everything and they might go to jail. This is how the underground railroad goes. I go to a person's house and they give me food and new clothes and they tell me where to go.

My journey has finally came to an end and I am a free man, but I decided to settle in Canada because I wanted to be In a safe place.

The first thing I did when i arrived at Canada was get a good education and get a job. I decided to join the army.

I found out after the civil war that my people were free. I was so happy to hear that news.
