table of contents | Neogene page 2,3 what was occurring page 4,5 Plants page 6,7 Animals page 8,9 climate page 10,11 summary page 12.13 bibliography page 14,15 | my topic is the Neogene period it started 23.03 million years ago
The Neogene is a geological time period. In the Cenozoic era. The Neogene period started 23.03–2.588 million years ago.
what was occurring during that time
During the Neogene period the earth became drier and cooler. Animals and plants that were common at that time are still common now.
Most of the plants that have appeared in the Neogene period are still here in the modern day. Plants and trees like pines, ferns, oak, mosses etc., were abundant at that time. The plants have survived because they adapted to different environments and climate changes that occurred over time. also since they were common then, it was easier for them reproduce and make new plants.
Animals in the Neogene period aren’t that much different than modern day animals. There were many types of mammals and marine life. Animals like giraffes, horses, elephants, and deer, as well birds such as sparrows, hawks and owls appeared for the first time. | Many animals became extinct during that time because of the cold weather. Most of the animals that became extinct were mammals like the woolly mammoth and saber-toothed cats. Some marine animals like the Megalodon, is a type of shark, also became extinct. | Some species in the modern day are smaller then their relatives in the Neogene period. Some animals were smaller now than they were a couple of thousand years ago. For an example some birds back then stood seven feet tall. Animals haven't changed a lot since then. The only difference is that some animals now are smaller than their past relatives as well as some species became extinct.
When the Neogene period began the climate was cool and dry. This had made life difficult for animals that couldn't adapt to the cold. Since the earth became cooler and drier, animals were forced to adapt or die. As time progressed countries were beginning to form the continents. As the countries collided with each other to form the continents, mountains rose and sea levels fell. As the mountains formed they altered air circulation and weather patterns which contribute to the drier and cooler climate. As the climate changed animals had to migrate to new continents where it was easier for their species to survive. The climate caused some animals to become extinct because some of the animals couldn't adapt to the cold. The ones which survived were the ones that managed to adapt to the new climate.
summary | The Neogene period started 23.03–2.588 million years ago. During the Neogene period the earth became drier and cooler, This made life for the animals which couldn't adapt. Plants didn't change that much. Most plants that were common then are still common here in the modern day.
