FC: Niagara Falls Region September 2010

A business trip for Gavin to Toronto, led me to join him for part of his stay and then extend our trip through the weekend. It gave us the opportunity to visit the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and the beautiful Niagara-On-the Lake region. | Niagara Falls Region September 2010

Breakfast at the historic St. Lawrence Market's Carousel Bakery - known as the home of the award-winning "World Famous Peameal Bacon Sandwich." Peameal Bacon is a boneless, cured pork loin rolled in cornmeal. | Yorkville Firehall built in 1890 and the "Sheriff's House" built in 1837. | TORONTO

The Distillery Historic District with it's brick-lined streets and restored Victorian Industrial buildings was a great place for shopping and dinner.

The Whirlpool Aero Car - Suspended above the Niagara River in an antique cable car, we were transported above the water to view the violent motion of the 60 acre whirlpool below. This natural phenomenon is formed at the end of the rapids where the river turns abruptly counterclockwise and the river escapes through the narrowest channel in the gorge. | NIAGARA FALLS CANADA

Rainbow Bridge, the American Falls, Horseshoe Falls (Canadian Falls) and the Maid of the Mist

 Horseshoe Falls

Horseshoe Falls | You can view the falls right up to the edge from the Canadian side

The American Falls and Horseshoe Falls at night

The Maid of the Mist - Donning stylish blue ponchos we set off from a calm part of the Niagara River, near the Rainbow Bridge, sailed past the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then into the dense mist of spray and thunderous fury inside the curve of the Horseshoe Falls

Passing the American Falls | Bridal Veil Falls | We actually got closer to the falls than these photos show, but the strength of the spray made it impossible to get a clear shot

We got soaked - but it was a lot of fun!

Journey Behind the Falls - Elevators descend 150 feet through bedrock to tunnels that lead to viewing portals behind the massive sheet of water, and then on to observation decks at the foot of the Falls.

Our Bed & Breakfast overlooking the vineyards

We enjoyed sampling many of the varietals including "Ice Wine," a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine.

Voted one of the prettiest towns in Canada, Niagara-On-The-Lake is home to the annual theater festival in honor of the playwright, George Bernard Shaw.
