FC: NO ROOF OVER HIGHER EDUCATION By: Ke'Andrea Ayers
This is my partner Shelton "Jae" Murphy. We are working on a documentary for a broadcast class we're into together. The documentary features the lives of homeless college students and it's called "No Roof Over Higher Education." | Behind the Scenes: No Roof Over Higher Education
This is a typical hallway at an average school seen the way the average student would see it. | But we wanted to see the college experience in a different light and look at it through the lens of a homeless college student.
Mission one in this journey: Find Homeless college students. Even if it meant taking a road trip.
The beautiful scenery in Baltimore didn't make the trip all that bad though.
First Stop: Morgan State University in Baltimore Maryland.
This is Eugene Selestain. He is 21, a student at Morgan State University in Baltimore and homeless. | "My first thought when I get to class is not let me turn in this paper for Professor so and so or Dr. so and so. It's where am I going to go after this?"
Meet 25 year old President L. Davis. Like Eugene, President didn't always have a roof over his head.
For two weeks while in school, this was his home.
President moved from Richmond California to DC with the determination to get into Howard University. When tuition ended up being more than expected he had to make a choice between paying tuition and paying rent. | This is the hostile President was living in when he moved to DC.
President ran low on cash and eventually ended up moving out of the hostile and slept under the slides at Pentworth Park on Georgia Avenue. | "I just remember tapping into the survival skills I had developed from California." -Davis
Sleeping on the streets is not the case for all college students. For some, it means hopping from couch to couch. | This is he case for Mr. Selestain. After class every he finds one of his friends couches to crash on.
Hakeem Tey and Darnell Thomas. Friends of Mr. Selestain
This is Neil Donovan. He is the Director for the National Coalition for the homeless. | He provided a lot of insight for our project and put the issue in perspective.
"A typical day for a college student who is homeless is hell." | FACT: According to an educational article, over 47,000 students checked that they were homeless on their financial aid applications.
Donovan sheds light on the fact that some students are willing to say in school even if it means being homeless....
because they feel earning a degree is their only way out.
President is now a junior at Howard University. He has his own place to say and a job.
Eugene is still battling homelessness but is learning to take it one step at a time. | "I just take it as that's life and at the end of this I'll definitely have a story to tell." -Selestain
