Isabel and Ruth are slaves. They used to belong to Mrs.Finch but then she died so now they belong to the Locktons. The Locktons are Loyalists who are pretending to be rebels. So a boy named Curzon asked Isabel to spy on the Locktons to try to put them in jail. Eventually they do find out that the Locktons are Loyalists and then try to put them in jail. Luckily for the Locktons Mr.Lockton escaped and said to come back soon. While Mrs.lockton was left at home with Isabel and Ruth. Ruth has a seizure. So Mrs.Lockton gives Isabel sleeping medicine and sells Ruth. Isabel is furious with Mrs.Lockton. Later Isabel finds out that Ruth didn't got sold and is close by in Charleston. Then Isabel becomes determined to find her and escape. | Summary
Isabel had internal conflict throughout the book, but was never able to solve it. All through the book she thought of Ruth. Even when they were together! But when Mrs. Lockton "sold" Ruth Isabel went crazy! Eventually she found out that Ruth wasn't sold and was determined to find her! The external conflict was the war going on. For example when Isabel was going to run errands while there was cannons shooting! Could you imagine?!?! That wasn't only a problem for her but other people too! | Conflict
I found that this book was very inspiring because of its theme. It had very good ones. For example one of them was family always comes first. I love this theme because it was just so touching. Isabel would die for Ruth that's how much she loves her! I think the love and emotion in this book is the thing that would make me want to read the book again. Another theme I found would be No one can control your life. Like when Mrs. Lockton would hurt and abuse Isabel just for doing something wrong. These are not the only two themes but the book is filled with many more great themes these are just a few of my favorites. | Theme
The characters in this story were very important. They made the story exciting! They made decisions that made me shocked when I read about it. The three main characters were Isabel, Curzon, and Mrs. Lockton. Isabel is fearless and would do anything for family. When she goes to live with the Locktons a boy named Curzon asked her to spy on her owners. She is reluctant at first but when Ruth gets sold she realizes that this could be the key to her freedom. Now Curzon is dangerous. He joined the patriots as a soldier in battles. He also tried to get the Locktons in jail which is very risky but a brave move. | Characters
Mrs. Lockton is the last main character. She has abused or has been abused through out the book. She's a middle aged lady that is a very cruel person. She couldn't care less about Isabel and Ruth, and sometimes even about her own family! For example Lady Semore is her sister, but when Lady Semore starts to die she doesn't feel bad or take care of her instead she goes to a ball! Can you even imagine a person this mean?
There was many great scenes in this book. Like when Isabel escaped, Isabel was marked with an "I" for insolent. Or when Curzon was put in jail! Well these are great scenes but, none of them are my favorite. My favorite scene was in Mrs. Locktons' house. The fire burning, the room smelling like smoke in the fall. Isabel awakes after Mrs.Lockton put sleeping medicine in the milk that she gave Isabel. When Isabel finally woke up Ruth was gone... Isabel started to panic! The fear/anger in her eyes she looked Mrs. Lockton straight in the eye and said "Did you sell Ruth?" Mrs. Lockton obviously started getting a little scared... Isabel got closer... Madam backed up now frighted | Favorite Scene
She told Isabel to go to the kitchen. Isabel ignored the demand and took a step closer. "She is only five and you took her away from me?" When Isabel could almost touch her, Mrs. Lockton took a picture from the wall and threw it at Isabel's head. It hit Isabel then Becky opened the door and said "Run!" This is my favorite scene because I could see myself there. I can smell the fire, I can feel the picture frame hitting my head, I could hear the door hinges as Becky opens it. I love to picture it and what is happening in the scene.
