S: Plants

FC: The day I learned about plants | By :Layla Purdy Pd.4

1: One day my Grandpa and I were walking in the park. There were a lot of plants I hadn't seen before. "Ben do you know the four main parts of a plant?" Grandpa asked. " I think so. Is it roots, stem,leaf,flower or fruit?" I asked. " Thats right!" he said | Leaf | Stem | Roots

2: "Grandpa, why do plants have roots?" I asked. "Well without the roots plants wouldn't be able to survive. The roots carry the nutrients from the soil to the rest of the plant. They also help the plants stay in the ground." he explained. " Oh! So just like we need food to survive they need good nutrients.Do all plants have the same kind of roots?" I asked. " Well, no some plants have taproots and others have fibrous roots. Taproots are a root that has one main root that grows downward with many other little roots coming out of it. Fibrous roots have several roots of the same size that spread out from the end of the stem."Grandpa explained. "Wow I didn't know that there were more than one type of root!"I exclaimed.

4: "Well Grandpa I know a little bit about plants. I read a couple facts in a book." I said "Oh did you now?" He asked. " I did. I know how the stem works. There are three main functions. The stem: -Supports the plant body -Brings nutrients between the roots and the plant body -And some stems store the nutrients." I explained to Grandpa "Wow that is amazing." he said. I felt proud. | Stores nutrients | Supports body | Brings nutrients between body and roots

5: "Grandpa what about the leaves?" I asked "What about them?" He asked back. "How do they work?" I said. " Well I am not quite sure why don't we ask the park enviromentalist." Grandpa insisted. "Okay! Hi Mr. Tim!" "Hi there Ben." Mr. Tim said greeting me and Grandpa. " I see you have met Mr. Tim before Ben."Grandpa said. "I Sure have! Mr.Tim how to the leaves work?" I asked. "Well Ben it is a process of photosynthesis. The chlorophyll acts as a filter and allows carbon dioxide to pass into it and lets the oxygen and water to come out of it." Mr. Tim said. " So the plants give us air?!" I asked " That is correct and the sun also gives energy to the plant a well." Grandpa said. " Cool!" | Allows Carbon dioxide to go in. | Allows Oxygen and water to come out.

6: "One last question." I insisted " And what would that be?" Mr. Tim asked. "Well why do plants have flowers?" I asked "Well Ben, flowers are on plants because they are adaptations. They use flowers to attract pollinators or catch the wind." Mr. Tim explained. " That is all Mr. Tim! Thank you for your time." I said.

7: "Come on Grandpa I am worn out lets go home." " I am pretty Worn out myself." Grandpa said. " Grandpa, I think I want to be a plant scientist when I grow up." I said " Well that is a good plan!" Grandpa said as we left the park.
