Imagining Motherhood Number of Children I thought I'd Have: I always thought I'd have two children. When I was younger, I imagined they'd be twins: one boy, and one girl. I knew I wanted to be a mother when: When other kids were imagining themselves as firemen or astronauts, I was imagining myself as a mother. A mom is what I wanted to be when I grew up. The age I imagined I'd be when I started having children: I thought I'd be in my mid twenties. I wanted to be completely finished having children by the time I turned 30. But, I'm glad we waited until we were more financially secure and (hopefully) more ready!
The Journey Begins My pregnancy was planned or a surprise? It was planned, but it happened a little sooner than we expected! We hadn't started actively trying yet, but we stopped being so careful. I first began thinking about having a baby: I've been thinking about having a baby for years. Since we got married, it became a real possibility but we were waiting for the right time. Why I wanted to have a baby: Well, babies are adorable. They smell wonderful and feel amazing in your arms. And they grow into amazing little people. I can't imagine growing older without having a family that included at least one child. Traits I hope the baby will inherit from me: I hope the baby will be kind and understanding and will love to read.
Traits I hope the baby will inherit from Rick: I hope the baby will be intelligent and thoughtful and caring. We thought it was a good time to have a baby because: We had paid down a lot of our debt, our mortgage was coming up for renewal, and we finally felt ready for the responsibility of a child. Things I changed before I became pregnant: I started saving up money for maternity leave 2 years before we got pregnant. I was also trying to get healthy and to get off of my migraine medication. I had lost some weight and was in the process of weaning myself off of my migraine medication when I got pregnant. I had also been planning surgery on my nose to help me breathe, but we conceived before I had a chance. How long it took to get pregnant: I got pregnant the second time I ovulated after I went off of the pill. I stopped taking it in early December, and we conceived on March 10th.
I'm Expecting I first thought I might be pregnant because: My period was late and my breasts were sore. I actually took a pregnancy test a day after my period was due, but it came back negative! How I confirmed my pregnancy: I took another pregnancy test on April Fool's Day. Rick and I had been working really long hours on a project and took April Fool's Day off. When I finally had enough downtime to look at my fertility charts on March 31st, I realized that I was quite possibly pregnant. I woke up early the next morning and went to the grocery store to get the pregnancy test and a smoothie to help the process along. Rick slept in, and I didn't end up taking the test until after Rick got up.
The instructions say you are supposed to wait 2 minutes for the little pink plus sign to show up, but it was almost instantaneous. I took the test upstairs and just held it out to Rick. I couldn't even speak because I was so shocked at that point. Because the first test had come back negative, I'd spent the last week or two convincing myself that all of my symptoms were just PMS. Rick was completely happy, he got a big smile on his face and hugged me right away. I was overjoyed because: We could have babies! I was so worried we would have trouble conceiving. I was nervous because: I was already 5 weeks pregnant and I had been taking migraine medication. I had also been eating sushi and cold cuts and I'd had some wine with dinner on our anniversary. And, of course, parenthood is a huge responsibility and I was wondering if we were really prepared.
Spreading the News The first person I told: Rick, about 5 seconds after I found out. How we told our families: We wanted to wait until we got the results from our ultrasound screening before we shared the news with our families, so we waited until the Victoria Day long weekend. We planned a BBQ at our house and invited the Glidden family and the Tanzola family, but didn't tell either family that the other was invited. We made the announcement over dessert! Reactions: Our families were incredibly happy for us. It was the very first grandchild for both sides! Everyone wanted to see the ultrasound pictures, and my Dad ran off very soon after because he couldn't wait to call his sisters to share the news.
