FC: Daggorhorn v. The Wolf My journal of hardships and my will to survive | Red Riding Hood by Catherine Hardwicke

I dedicate this to Lucie for her caring nature and beautiful disposition..

I still can not understand why it had to be done. We have so many chickens, why did it have to be Flora? Cesaire told me "the goat is all we can afford to offer," (12) but why? I never had any say as to whether or not she should be sacrificed to the Wolf! | Entry #1

That night I followed Flora out into the depths of the woods, and I saw...something. But in one blink it was gone...And so was Flora.

Last night I went on a camping trip with my girl friends and Lucie. We were all having a wonderful time until we crossed the river to visit the men. I saw Peter there. Then suddenly "there was an unearthly growl in the distance." (75) | Entry #2

We took a boat across the river back to Daggorhorn but when we got back no one knew where Lucie was. And oddly enough, she still hasn't come back...how strange.

I have been betrothed today to Henry Lazar. Of all the girls he could have chosen, why did he choose me? Every girl in Daggorhorn would die to be with him, but I don't feel the same. | Entry #3 | ??

I was informed of this news by Peter. It was then that I knew for a fact that I would always love Peter. Not Henry Lazar. As soon as he told me, ''Valerie felt something fall to the floor of her stomach like a wet rag.'' (narrator 86) I suppose I should just accept this fact, and move on with my life. But I can't do it.

"Valerie ran and fell before Lucie's lifeless body, clutching desperately at shreds of hay." (98) | "When we lose one we love, our bitterest tears are called forth by the memory of hours we love not enough." (Maurice Maeterlinck) | Entry #4

Todays life lesson: life is cruel and mean. As soon as the four bells began to ring in the distance I had a gut feeling. I knew who it was. My sister. The Wolf is becoming worse and worse each day, and someone needs to stop it. I still can't come to terms with her death. I still find myself thinking that she will walk through the door with a smile and her beautiful hair flows behind her skinny body. But unfortunately, I am wrong.

Last night the men went out to hunt the Wolf. I was so worried as I thought about my father. I thought, "He can't even swing his axe to meet a chink in a tree...how will he confront a ravening beast?" (123) They came back with a few less men than before. And one of them was Henry's dad, Adrien. On their return the whole town gathered to see what they had brought back, and it was a Wolf's head that was placed on a pole as a sign of truimph. | Entry #5

"Courage is as often the outcome of despair as of hope; in the one case we have nothing to lose, in the other, everything to gain." (Diane de Pointiers)

Roxanne and I saw the Wolf. But as scary as Roxanne says it was, she was the lucky one. She only saw the large teeth, big eyes and monstrous body. I however experienced its voice as well. It seemed as though the words pouring from the beasts mouth were made up of those I had heard from each person I know or had known. When he spoke, "We are alike, you and I." (219) I couldn't help but scream. | Entry #6

 Nothing more scary.

I thought Roxanne was my friend, but the whole time she was just waiting to be rid of me. Father Solomon threatened kill Claude, but then Roxanne did the unthinkable. "If you spare my brother...I'll give you the name of a witch." (258) As I write this entry, I sit on the cold bench of a jail cell, all for the release of a boy I hardly know. | Entry #7

"One should die rather than be betrayed. There is no deceit in death. It delivers precisely what it has promised. Betrayal though...betrayal is the willful slaughter of hope." (Steven Deitz)

As I write I am in the center of town; the sky is black and no one is in sight. The only person I have seen in hours is Prudence-the girl I believed to be my friend. I then noticed what a fool I am after she leaned close to me and whispered, "Your loss is our gain. Now you're gonna get what you deserve." (295) | Entry #8

I am being sacrificed to the Wolf. Solomon decided my fate, and although many stood up in my defense Solomon refused to change his mind. Who would have thought I would end up dying the same way as my sister? | Entry #8 | A mask of humility, of death.

Henry saved me from the teeth of the monster. He helped me to escape and as we ran to the church where we could claim sanctuary. As we ran one of Solomon's men attempted to shoot me with an arrow, but Henry had taken it for me. "He'd taken it for her." (310) | Entry #9

But then as we drew closer to the church the Wolf appeared. Solomon grabbed me. "He set his sword against her throat, using her as a human shield." (311) He was trying to kill me!

This morning I woke up with a very strange feeling about Grandmother. So I ran to her house to check on her, and see if she was okay. When I walked in I took a look around and then said, "What big teeth you have Grandmother." (322) Fortunately I woke up. But I still continued to worry so off I ran to Grandmother's house.

 Entry #10
