FC: RISD Museum Providence, RI March, 2014

RISD's donation box serves two purposes, as a piece of artwork and as a place for visitors to make a donation. | Who is involved: Installation/Preparator Exhibit Designer Security/Facilities Finance Staff | "When you enter an exhibition, almost everything around you had been installed, arranges, and possibly even created by a preparator" (Schlatter, 70)

Who is Involved: IT/Tech Specialists Exhibit Designer Installation Technician Curator | In many rooms at the RISD museum, there was a projector hidden in the ceiling or walls. They projected videos, images, and text to explain and enhance the exhibits

Who is Involved: IT/Tech Specialist Special Events Coordinator | This is the Tech Room in RISD's auditorium. This room houses all the sound equipment and technology associated with events held in the auditorium, including lectures, workshops, special events, and even rentals. The Tech Specialist on duty was a student from RISD- The museum receives a lot of student help and work.

Who is Involved: Visitors Services Information Officer Membership Development Finance Staff Marketing | This is one of the Welcome Desks. Here, they handle general admissions and membership There were plenty of pamphlets and brochures to browse before starting your visit.

Who is Involved: Museum Store Staff Finance Staff | The RISD Museum Store can be entered without paying admission to the Museum. They sell RISD gear, but also artwork in various forms

Who is Involved: Special Events Coordinator Visitor Services Marketing Possibly Curator/Research Possibly Education Possibly Membership/Development Finance Staff Security | There were several classes, lectures, or workshops being held in RISD Museum on the day I visited. Since RISD Museum is an extension of Rhode Island School of Design, this is not surprising. Many of the classes, though may not be associated with the school. RISD's Event Coordinator, Education Staff, and Visitor Services must work hard to keep a steady, smooth schedule of programs without running into class/space conflicts.

Who is involved: Security Curator/Exhibit Designer Registrar Installation Technician | This exhibit was not installed yet. A security guard sat next to the space, making sure visitors were not climbing over the barriers but also so visitors knew they could pass through the space to get to the next gallery. This was a fun opportunity to see some of the Exhibit Designer's plans for the installation and how artwork was transported

Who is Involved: A Curator Security Registrar Student/Staff Administration Who is Not Involved: Certain Curators | While I entered this section, I spoke to a security guard/docent about this particular piece of art, which frames a door to the Pendleton House, a wing dedicated to 18th and 19th century decorative artwork. What the docent told me was that one of the curators (RISD has 10 curatorial staff) who works intimately in Pendleton House was not informed about the "PEEP SHOW" neon signs until they were installed. The docent explained that because museum is under the RISD college, sometimes student work will take preference!

Who is Involved: Exhibit Designer Registrar Curator/Researcher | This area displayed part of RISD's silver works. A unique aspect of this space were the drawers designed to pull out and showcase, while also protecting, the silver cutlery. | "The curator is responsible for the exhibition of objects under the care of the curatorial department, participates in exhibition-planning teams, arranges for and monitors the care and security of objects on exhibition and in storage..." (Glaser, 80)

Who is Involved: Security Registrar Installation Technician | Most Chairs You May Not Sit On | RISD is home to many pieces of historic and unique furniture. Most of these are protected by ropes and barriers. In addition, there were security guards/docents stationed in almost every area of the Museum to keep an eye on visitors and the artwork.

But Some, you can! | Who is not involved: --> Security There were no security guards located in this section of the museum- Very unusual!

Who is involved: Curator Exhibit Designers Architects Finance Staff | RISD Museum is comprised of several buildings of different time periods and architecture. The contrast between old and new is well represented in this picture- a modern walkway leading to a historic building.

RISD Museum was filled with all kinds of visitors, students, and artwork. This final image, a student sketching a statue in a remote wing of the museum, sums up what makes RISD Museum so special, a place where art is displayed, appreciated, and made. | Who is Involved: Visitor Services Membership Development Education | "Academic museums and galleries offer an intellectually stimulating work environment with an emphasis on teaching, research, and interdisciplinary projects that integrate collections of original materials across the curriculum." Downs and Robertson, 68)
