FC: Save the arts! A persuasive research project by Ms. Sig

How many of you, like myself, look forward to band or art class so much more than Algebra or Biology? Sometimes, we just want to take center stage or grab paintbrushes instead of number 2 pencils. However, due to increased pressure to raise test scores in the “core” subjects with the passing of George W. Bush’s education law No Child Left Behind in 2001, more and more school systems are making cuts that prevent these vital courses from being offered (“State of the Arts”). Even though tougher testing requirements are a reality, schools must not cut funding for arts programs because such courses help student’s thinking skills in all subjects as well as help with confidence and motivation.

Reason 1: Participation in the arts helps improve student's ability to learn | Recent research has shown that students who take music classes in high school often score higher on the math portion of the SAT (Ruppert 12) | Consider the learning skills you learn in music that carry over to math: patterns, counting, combinations, values.

Art and musical expression exercises the right side of the brain-the intuitive portion-unlike most academic classes, which focus on the left side (Harris). | Not everyone learns the same way, so using arts courses to learn and practice the same skills in a more active and creative manner can only help students achieve!

Reason 2 is next! You need two points of your own original analysis as well as at least 2 facts/statistics from your research. Credit must be given by using parenthetical citations!

You must also include graphics and images that relate to the content of the pages!

The next portion of your book will be opposing viewpoints. You must cite at least 3 claims/arguments against your own!

Your conclusion is next. Remember to rephrase your thesis sentence and answer the question "So What?"

Works Cited | Here is where you will list in ABC order the sources you used in your book. Remember to indent every line after the first for each entry!

You will likely use more than one page.
