1: Date: May 11, 2011 Dear Team, It has been a great privilege to be a part of our team this year. We have had a very successful season even though we did not accomplish our goal of bringing home a state title. I believe that many of you have fulfilled the definition of success according to the great coach John Wooden, who incidentally passed away this last year at the age of 99 – he said; “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” I hope that each of you have learned some things about being successful this year. Mostly, I hope that each of you know what it takes to work hard and prepare to succeed at the highest level possible, not only in baseball, but in whatever you choose to do in your life. Another sports icon – Yogi Berra said; "If you don't know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else." This is funny, but so true and it will mean something different to each one of you whether you’re an underclassman or a graduating senior. May each of you take the time to think about where you’re going in your life and then take the steps necessary to getting there. Our team motto this year has been, “Individuals play the game, but teams beat the odds”. Many times this year, we have “beaten the odds” as a team. In the future, your “team members” will change, but I hope that you will know what it takes to work with them to accomplish a common goal and beat the odds. Be grateful for those “team members” who help you along the way – your family, your friends, religious leaders, teachers, coaches, and so on. I am grateful for my family and their support, also for Coaches; Craner, Bales, McNeil, and the others who dedicate so much time, effort and resources to our program. I’m grateful for each one of you team members and the memories that you have brought into my life. May God bless you in your choices and decisions in the future and may you continue to work to accomplish all of your dreams and aspirations. Respectfully: Your Friend and Coach – David Nikolaus
