2: We Love, We Laugh, We Play & We Pray Together. | The Sims-Gant Family Every once in a while forefathers managed to teach their children to teach their children's children to love and take care of each other; no matter how far apart they become and no matter what events happen that may threaten their sense of togetherness. The forefathers and mothers of the Sims-Gant family were those kinds of people. Long before the term "Family Reunion" was popular or even defined, this family came together on weekends, after church services on Sundays and communed. The benefits of these communions are seen within these pages, and it is obvious that the love thrives. We continue to grow and love each other as a family. | Khalilah Dickey & Edna Scott

4: The Roots of the Sims-Gant Family | Long ago, in the 1890's, Thomas Sims decided that he would no longer allow his mother, Mahaley to endure his father's treatment of her by being involve with Iota, the other woman. He, along with his mother, her brother Isaac (our aunts and uncles called him Uncle Ike) and Thomas' sisters: Laura, who ended up having 1 child; Sylvia, who would later marry Paul Young and have 1 stepchild; Pinkey, who later married McKillop Howard and had 4 children; and Josephine, who later married Verger Saulter first, then Joseph Thomas and had a total of 8 children. Thomas, who would later marry Maggie Gant and have 13 children, left his father Elic and his 8 brothers in Opelika, Alabama and headed south. Elic's parents, Kitty and Allen Sims, who were both born about 1820 were no longer living by then. Aside from his father, Elic and his his brothers, Thomas also left his aunts and uncles, Kitty and Allen Sims other eight children; Becky, Judy, Phoebe, Chaney, Sam, Allen, Jordan and King Sims. He left determined not to speak of them again. As a matter of fact, not only did he leave his immediate family in Alabama, but he left members of his extended family who lived nearby on plantation owned and occupied by Derryl Hart and his family. It was determined by the DNA test that Nathan Collins, son of Barney Sims took in 2008, that the bloodline of Thomas Sims is related to the bloodline of Harry H. Hart. But while the slaves on James and Lucretia Sims plantation remained in Alabama or moved south towards Florida, some the descendants of Derryl and Jane Hart's slaves moved north towards Boston, Massachusetts. Harry Hart's grandchildren now live in Seattle, WA and New York, while most of Thomas Sims' grandchildren now live in Florida.

5: As Thomas Sims and his mother, uncle and 4 sisters headed south toward Florida and arrived in Georgia, they found reason to pause in Thomasville where they met Bryant and Cherrie Bivens Sanders, and their children. These two families quickly became friends and then family. Bryant was a slave on a plantation owned by Wright Sanders and his family. Cherry was a slave on a plantation owned by Moses M. Futch and later George W. Bivens. It is not clear when Bryant and Cherry married as the slave records regarding marriages could not be found. Even though they had 15 children, the first known child born to them was Rance Sanders, who was born in 1850, almost 15 years before slavery ended. He married Florance Mozel and had 5 children. Bryant and Cherry went on to have 7 more children during and after slavery ended. The children were: Jonah (Joe) Sanders who married Harriet Jones and then Queen Anne Shaw and had a total of 20 children; our own Fannie who married Peter Gant and had 5 children (Laura, Leona, Charlie, Maggie and Essie Mae); Simon Peter, who first married Rose and then Mary McMullen and had 12 children; Rachael, who married Sandy Jackson and had 8 children; Nettie, who married James Dyson and had 5 children; Peggie, who married Anderson Hardy and had 20 children (2 sets of triplets and 3 sets of twins); and Rebecca (Beckie), who married John Boyd and had 2 children. Her siblings called her Beckie, but when she got to Lakeland, Maggie and her children called her Aunt Rebecca. It is bound to happen that families this size would be parted, never to see each other or hear from parts of the family for years. In the case of Thomas Sims, he made the decision to not speak of his father and half brothers that he left in Alabama. But, with Maggie, Charlie and their mother Fannie, we don't know why they didn't make sure that we kept in touch with the family that they left in Thomasville, GA. And it has taken us more than 130 years to find them. Until the day when the descendants of these roots can come together again, as Sims-Gants...

20: Family reunions are the best events in which a family, who for reasons of just "living" are seperated, can come together and know and enjoy each other as a FAMILY. We should never let time or space keep us from knowing our family and our roots.
