FC: Story of a Bill | H.R. 3152 | The Patriot Act | by: Alex Kessler | Kevin Blank
The Patriot Act | The USA Patriot Act's purpose is to protect American citizens from terroristic attacks. USA Patriot stands for, "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism." Was created after the attack on the twin towers on September 11th, 2001
Introduced | to the Senate on October 11th 2001 as an "Anti-Terrorism" bill along with others quickly after the attack. The bill was introduced because of the recent terroristic act the month before on New York City. To prepare and prevent future occurrences, the bill was introduced quickly. | On September 11th, 2001 A terroristic attack took place after numerous planes were crashed into The Pentagon and The World Trade Center | The Incident
The next day, October 25th, 2001, it was passed by the Senate, 98-1. October 26th, 2001 President George W. Bush signed it as a law - Public Law No. 107-56 | The Bush Administration sent drafts of the legislation on September 24th, 2001 to Congress . ...13 days after the attack. | It was reviewed and changed as a new bill (H.R. 3152) on October 24th, 2001 by the House resolving House Vs. Senate conflict October 23rd, 2001 - Passed by The House
The passing of the bill was incredibly fast. The bill went from being passed by the House and Senate, to being signed by the president, to being made a public law in a matter of a month. | Jim Sensenberger | Introduced The Patriot Act
Controversy | Due to the rapid decision to make and pass the bill, many feel that it wasn't reviewed enough, therefore allowing procedures that many of our people find unnecessary. For example, searches at local places like airports require a very intrusive procedure that many people disagree with.
Reflection | The Patriot Act was a necessary option against the terroristic attacks taken place in New York on September 11th. It increased security everywhere around the world including airports and schools. However, the procedures that are taken to ensure those places are secure, many find the be inappropriate. The searches many say take away our 4th Amendment, and because it was passed so quickly, there was not enough time to properly look through all the loopholes. Revisions are constantly taking place to ensure that the security is efficient but not opposing to our citizens.
