S: All about the depression

FC: The depression

1: On Thursday, October 24th, 1929 the market crashed. A ton of investors were nervous because of the rising interests rates. this sparked the flame that grew quickly of investors selling their shares. So many stocks being sold made the price plummet which made it crash. Banks could not pay back money they had borrowed, companies could not take out loans from the banks, and companies had to fire many people because not enough supply and demand was there. The five main reasons for the great depression was the market crash, banks failed, people could not afford to buy things, trading with Europe, and the droughts had an affect on the people living there.

2: and people reacted hastily. It took quite a while for the country to get back on its feet. | The great depression was long, | hard, and miserable. It started 1929, October 24 when the stock prices fell | Finally, in 1939 (around that time) the depression started to down size and relief was coming. Even though 1939 is the year people consider the depression to be over, many people still suffered until help was on its way and hope started to blossom.

3: Life for people was depressing. (hence it being called the depression) As migrants still came to the country they a lot of times did not find jobs, if they did the pay was very little. For the native born, it was not much better. Long lines of men trying to find work, starving children, and horrific places for living. | People ate, lived, and worked where ever they could find it. If they could not find jobs then they would sell apples and other vegetables. The depression had physical and emotionally bad effects. | These were desperate times calling for desperate measures.

4: The great depression effected everyone! | Even though it did not effect everyone with the same disastrous outcome, it did effect the world. Because of the great depression there was a global depression. The government put high taxes on imports which made trading hardly happen at all. On top of that, other parts of the world were also having financial problems because of all the war debts. | The American worker had huge consequences from this down fall. Many lost their jobs, could not pay for their houses or cars, could not afford food. Their families suffered along with them. Many times the women and kids also tried to find work or sell things. | For African Americans they faced discrimination. Even though the government came out with relief deals, most of the time the African Americans did not get the same pay, jobs, or living that the whites did. They would be lynched sometimes and no one would help them.

5: Really, it took quite a while for the recovery of the great depression. | The renewing of the countries finances started taking place when President Roosevelt tried his power in making "recovery deals." He first got Congress to pass the New Deal program which did spark some improvement in parts of the country. Franklin D. Roosevelt was once again elected and put into action the Second New Deal. These New Deals effected many people and even though some said it was | doing no good, it did help the economy. Joining in World War II also helped create more jobs. Slowly over time is when the depression started to fade and hope found a home.
