FC: Hawk Stadium - how the dream became a reality!

It started out as a conversation between several men at an away track meet in 2007, which soon turned into a big dream for them. They put together a non-profit organization and found others in the community willing to help who were as excited as they were.

The men who first discussed the idea of a new track and field at the Burnside track meet, were Jim Uthe, Kevin Thiele, & Max Phillips. The idea spread around the community and soon many people wanted to help and a committee was formed: Jim Uthe- President, Teri Mayfield- Secretary, Brian Crnkovich- Treasurer, Lance Kooiker- Fundraiser. The committee began holding monthly meetings, which soon turned into weekly meetings. They dreamed, they planned and they began the fundraising efforts. Jim Uthe was a huge part of making this whole thing happen and become a reality. Not only did he spend countless hours in the planning stages and fund raising efforts but he, and his family, also put many hours of hard labor and their own money into the project. The school board voted to name the new stadium, "Uthe Stadium" to honor the man that had the dream and determination to see this project through, but being the humble man he is, he asked the committee to reconsider and leave the name "Hawk Stadium", and they could honor him by naming the track "Uthe track & field."

Now to share with you how the Woodward Granger football field and track went from this... | To this... with a lot of dreams, ideas, fund raising, community support, monetary donations as well as in-kind donations!

Prior to construction on the Woodward-Granger track and field, the field ran east to west, and the cinder track was 440 meters long.

Before every home football game, the boys walked down Hawk Drive to the field. November 2, 2009 was the last time the team walked down that road to the "old field." The Hawks won their final game against Panorama, 34-6. The last track meet, "Hugh Cavanaugh Relays" was held in 2002.

After the last home football game of 2009, a ground breaking ceremony was held. During the ceremony, community members had a bonfire on the field, and the "first dig" was made by Jim Uthe, Jennifer Pierce (School board member), Bill Dean (Woodward Academy), and Jody Gray (Superintendent.) While history was being made, parents discussed the future of Woodward-Granger athletics and how this project would make an impact on the community and future athletes. | The community celebrated the last win, on the old field together.

Construction quickly started after the final game.

Construction continued... | ..and continued.. | ..and continued.

Construction still continued... | ...and continued.

Even with the track not finished, the first football game was played and won on August 27, 2011, against Prairie Valley.

Details on the stadium were still being worked on until, April 7, 2011, when the first meet was hosted. Due to weather, the meet was not finished. It was rescheduled and postponed once again because of weather. As of now, a new date has not been set.

Fundraising Events: -5k run -Can collection -141 garage sale -Advertising -Asking for donations from businesses -Benefit concerts -Donations by individuals and families -Pancakes breakfasts -Spaghetti dinners -K-12 competition -Auction -Granger Days Barbeque -Car raffle -Elementary Carnival -T-shirt sales | Special thanks to the Woodward Academy for the $250,000 pledge.
