FC: The Real World By:Asyndace Turner

Asyndace Turner is a 9th grade student at Oxford High School. Asyndace currently has straight A’s and plans on graduating in the top 25% of her class. She enjoys shopping, playing volleyball, hanging with friends, and reading books in her spare time. When it comes to writing, Asyndace likes to write about her future goals and her passion, which is becoming a well-known model. | Ms. Turner finds to the most challenging part of the near future to be surviving in the real world on her own, managing a stable budget, all while living in the magnificent city of Atlanta, Georgia. When Asyndace gets older, she hopes to become a dental hygienist and work towards getting her master's degree. After that, she plans to open a dental hygiene office of her own, and expand her career further. Her advice for students that will be entering the 9th grade next year is to work to the best of their ability, and that grades actually do count. Don't procrastinate and always be respectful to authority; their future begins here. | About the Author

I plan to be a dental hygienist for a living. The annual salary for this job is $45,430. Dental hygienists receive medical benefits and opportunities for advancement. Medical benefits include life insurance, dental insurance, and disability. Opportunities for advancement include working in corporations, or a hospital setting. Some responsibilities include teaching dental hygiene, taking oral X-rays, and applying fluoride and cavity preventing agents to patients' teeth. My ultimate goal in this profession is to provide good quality and ethical dental hygiene to patients of all backgrounds and prevent them from having cavities and other painful diseases. | Profession

I attended Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. It is located in Huntsville, Alabama. I chose this university because the school is very historical, and enriched me with knowledge. It isn't that expensive and provided me with the skills I needed to pursue my dream of being a dental hygienist. Alabama A&M offered many scholarship programs, extracurricular activities to get involved in, and student resources, such as the Alumni and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Scholarship program. I majored in B.S. (bachelors in science) in biology. I am now looking for a job as a dental hygienist. I chose this profession because I want to set a good example for others, educate people on dental hygiene, and preserve healthy smiles. I also plan to maintain a higher position as a dental hygienist and work along with the dentist in charge. | Education

 Standard Living

I am going to live at Ashley Auburn Pointe Apartments located at 357 Auburn Pointe Dr SE,Atlanta, GA 30312. The rent for this apartment is $825 a month. In order to move in, I will need to pay a security deposit of $825. Some features of this apartment are activities and programs, a clothes care facility, transportation is available, and spacious 1 and 2 bedrooms. Other bills that I will need to pay each month will include $50 a month for water, DISH TV bundle package with internet for $59.99, and a cell phone bill of $45 a month. I will also have to pay $125 for electricity.

 City Overview

Now that I have graduated, I plan to move to Atlanta. I chose to live in this city because it is a very beautiful place with many attractions; I love to venture out and try new things, therefore, going to Atlanta would provide me with this opportunity, Second, a dental hygienist gets paid up to $66,587 annually working in the city of Atlanta. That is about $21,000 more than working in the state of Alabama. Also, the city of Atlanta provides waste cleanups, recreational centers, and associations that help to beautify neighborhoods and make people feel welcomed. This city is located in Georgia. The overall population of this city is 443,775. It is close to Douglasville, Marietta, and Peachtree City. The primary forms of entertainment in this city are museums, aquariums, amusement parks, football domes, and zoos/safaris. Most people in this city do industrialization and commercial work. The crime rate in this city is 670, which is considered high.

 Household Items

The apartment that I chose came equipped with a refrigerator, a dishwasher, a stove, and a clothes care facility. Therefore I had to purchase kitchen chairs,a couch, end tables, plates, bowls, and other household items. With the assistance of my graduation present, I was able to save $136.35. This amount gave me additional money for the month to spend on entertainment, such as going out to eat. The majority of these funds were spent on furniture and appliances, such as comforters and a TV stand. Some of my priorities in furnishing my apartment were getting bath towels, a couch, linens, and silverware/plates. Some things that I had to do without were a new computer, a sectional living room couch, a love seat, and tray tables.

 Transportation

At this point of the project, I cannot afford a car. Instead of a car, I chose to travel by railway on the MARTA ( Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) within Atlanta. The fair is $2.50 per ride, which is $5 per day. This would equal $150 a month towards transportation. I wish I could afford my own car, but that will have to wait for later. Before getting a car, I will have to further my career as a dental hygienist and increase my annual salary. The reason I would prefer my own car is because using public transportation has many dangers. It is crowded, fights can break out, and you are more prone to diseases and infection.

 Grocery List

My total grocery bill for this month was $298. I purchased items in skin care, diary, personal, and other. In skin care, I spent $22 total. Diary items added up to $23 and other was $169. Meat was $57 total, while personal added up to $27. Personal items included things such as Herbal Essences shampoo and Olay lotion. A majority of my funds were spent in the other section because it included things that weren't necessary to my budget. For example, this section contained chips, apples, and noodles. Those are just a few of my favorites snacks, therefore, adding more to my grocery bill for the month. I believe this list will be sufficient in providing myself food for a full month in that I have all the basic, nutritional foods, such as milk, cheese, and chicken. In drafting this grocery list, I learned you have to budget your money wisely. You can't spend $20 and $30 here and there on things such as candy and Debbie cakes. Instead, your money has to be spent towards items that are vital to your household.

Entertainment and Miscellaneous Items After paying all my monthly bills, I have $665.52 to spend on entertainment and miscellaneous items. I put $15 into savings, $15 into home maintenance, $50 for food, $50 for hair/salon services, and $50 into entertainment (movies, or skating). Also, $75 went towards clothing and $50 went towards shoes. The total amount of money spent on miscellaneous and entertainment was $305. After making allocations for this section, my total budget is $360.52.

 Budget Reflection

In this project, majority of my money was spent in home, and the least amount of money was spent in savings and entertainment. My unexpected expense mainly dealt with overspending; I had money left, but it was enough to make it through the month. I compensated for these expenses by changing my transportation to railway, cutting back on buying expensive clothes and shoes, and going out to eat and the movies once a month. $136.35 was inserted back into my budget from my graduation present. Without this money for the next month, I will have to cut back on groceries. Instead of buying snacks, I will have to by nutritional foods and eat at cheap restaurants. I now know that you have to be smart with your budget. It is really easy to overspend. Between buying groceries, and paying for rent, your money can go within the snap of a finger. After learning all this, I plan to go to school for an extra 2-3 years in order to further my career as a dental hygienist, and increase my annual salary. I may open a dental facility, or try and work with a head dentist in charge. When my budget is settled, I will then look for a car and start traveling.
