FC: The Pursuit of Truth: Thucydides

What is truth? | Truth is, simply put, a verified fact. | It could be something like Archimedes Principle, which is known to this day to always hold true. | Or it could be a simple fact, just as, according to Hippocrates, illnesses were not sent from the gods.

The people we have studied so far have seen truth in different ways... | Alexander the Great, perhaps Greece's most influential leader found truth through traveling. Exploring different cultures fascinated him, so he did so by conquering other countries and freely visiting exotic places

Socrates, however, found truth through challenging the Athenian government and demanding an explanation for everything. This is what made Socrates such a well-known person and such a talented teacher, but it was also, unfortunately the reason he was killed

The Meaning of Truth | Over time, truth changes due to new discoveries. If something that is known to be true is disproved, then it is not the truth anymore.

In my opinion, the one person that studied truth in a way that remains relevant today is Thucydides.

Thucydides | Thucydides was a Greek Historian famous for his works on the Peloponnesian War. He wrote an unbiased account of these wars, writing everything just as it had happened. Although he was Athenian, he still criticized the way that the Athenians handled the war and was not judgmental of the Spartans.

In his quest to keep the truth, Thucycides wrote a book entitled, The History of The Peloponnesian War. This book contained all of his articles that accurately displayed the Peloponnesian War with no bias. This book is still in existence today, rewritten by numerous different authors to make it easier to understand. Therefore, the Thucydides’ ideas of truth have held up over time.

 Peloponnesian War

The war that Thucydides wrote about that got him famous was the Peloponnesian War. It resulted in a Spartan win, but as an Athenian, Thucydides wrote an honest account.

Socrates and Thucydides... | Socrates was tried and then executed for teaching things that were against common belief. Since he did not go along with the government, he was executed.

In my opinion, Thucydides was very much alike to Socrates. Even though his home was Athens, he still kept all of his works unbiased even if it insulted his home country. | Negative Effects of Thucydides' Pursuit of Truth

Thucydides' Pursuit of Truth: Positive Effects on the Modern Day World

The main positive effect that Thucydides’ truth is that we have gained so much accurate knowledge on the Peloponnesian War. From his information, we have also have learned information on Ancient Greece in general. Because of his desire to pursue truth, we know so much more about Greece's past than we ever would have.
